Shooting Struggles Cost Dukes Against Seawolves

Duquesne shoots season-low from floor; Wraps up five-game road swing

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The Duquesne women's basketball team wrapped up its five-game road trip Sunday afternoon, falling at Stony Brook, 52-39, inside Stony Brook Arena. With the loss, the Dukes dropped to 6-5 (.545) this season.

POINT OF EMPHASIS
Duquesne struggled offensively from the opening tip, as Stony Brook jumped out to a 9-4 lead at the first media timeout with the Dukes opening the game just 2-of-11 from the field. Coming out of the break, junior Reina Green split a pair at the foul line, and sophomores Mackenzie Blackford and Faith Walker each converted layups, trimming the deficit to 14-9 after one quarter. Sophomore Harriet Ford opened the second frame with a basket, but the Seawolves responded with seven unanswered points to extend their lead to 21-11 with 6:19 remaining. Green briefly stopped the run with back-to-back buckets, though both teams closed the quarter shooting a combined 2-of-10 from the field while committing seven turnovers.

TRYING TO FIND RHYTHM
Unfortunately, the shooting woes persisted for the Dukes in the third quarter, as they went just 1-of-12 from the field and 0-of-3 from beyond the arc. After a three-pointer from Janay Brantley and freshman Alexis Bordas split a pair at the charity stripe, both teams endured a three-and-a-half-minute scoring drought. Alex Brown then connected on back-to-back layups to extend the Seawolves' lead to 32-17 before Bordas scored Duquesne's lone field goal of the quarter with 3:45 remaining. Stony Brook (4-8) closed the frame on a 10-4 run, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, to carry a 42-23 advantage into the final quarter. Duquesne continued to fight, opening the final 10 minutes with nine straight points, led by Bordas. The freshman sparked the rally with a layup, followed by a triple from Blackford and a pair of free throws from sophomore Fatou Sane. Bordas capped the run with another layup, pulling the Dukes within 42-32 with just over seven minutes remaining, but that would be as close as they would get.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Alexis Bordas was the lone Duke to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points, three rebounds, and one assist. Reina Green added seven points and three rebounds, while Mackenzie Blackford chipped in five points, two rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore Maja Rohkohl pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, and classmate Harriet Ford contributed eight rebounds and four points.
