Opening Tip
- The Duquesne University men's basketball team heads to Akron, Ohio, Saturday, for a 4:00 p.m. tip against Northeastern in the Morgan & Morgan Classic, which will be played at Lebron James Arena at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, the alma mater of second-year head coach
Dru Joyce III.
- The Dukes are coming off a
92-78 victory over Loyola (Md.) (Nov. 19) at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse as forward
John Hugley IV led four players in double figures with 20 points (7-for-8 from the field) while also compiling five rebounds and three assists.
- Also in the win over the Greyhounds, guards
Cam Crawford and
Tarence Guinyard each scored 19 points, while forward
David Dixon notched the first double-figure scoring effort of his senior season with 10 points. As a team, Duquesne shot 55.2 percent (32-for-58) from the field, including 60 percent (15-for-25) after halftime.
- Saturday marks the seventh consecutive year the Dukes are playing a neutral site game in Joyce III's hometown of Akron, Ohio, as he helped lead the Fighting Irish to back-to-back Ohio state championships in 2000 and 2001 along with Lebron James.
- Duquesne is 6-0 in games played in the City of Invention, including a pair of wins over Radford (2018, 2019) and victories over UC Irvine (2021), Colgate (2022), Bradley (2023) and Towson (2024).
- The 2025-26 season marks the 110th year of Duquesne basketball. The Dukes started play in 1913-14 (DU did not field a team in 1944-45-46 due to World War II). Thanks to
an 83-63 victory over Niagara (Nov. 3) in its 2025-26 season opener, Duquesne earned program victory No. 1,500.
- In today's day and age of college basketball with the NCAA Transfer Portal, Duquesne offers senior forward
David Dixon, who will play his final season with the Dukes in 2025-26 and has spent his entire career on the Bluff. Dixon, 6'9" and 230 pounds, owns career totals of 594 points and 441 rebounds and last season became just the second player in program history to eclipse career totals of both 100 blocks and 100 dunks.
- Dixon is one of just four players in the Atlantic 10 this season that have spent their entire career with one program, joining 6'10" forward Sean Logan of Davidson, 6'10" forward Christian Fermin of VCU and 6'11" center Mike Walz of Richmond. Ironically, each of the four student-athletes to have played their entire career at one institution are post players.
- Redshirt senior guard
Maximus Edwards scored
10 points in the win over Sacred Heart (Nov. 7) to reach exactly 1,000 points for his career. Named the 2023 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Edwards scored 722 in two seasons at George Washington before transferring to the Bluff and has scored 305 points in his time at Duquesne. He owns a career scoring average of 10.3 points in 100 games at the NCAA Division I level thanks to 1,027 points.
- The Dukes return home for a three-game homestand after taking on the Huskies, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 26, with a 6:00 p.m. tip against Central State at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
At The Helm – Dru Joyce III was named the 18th head coach in the 110-year history of Duquesne basketball March 28, 2024, and in his second year at the helm in 2025-26. He owns an overall record of 17-20 (.459) in his first head coaching job. Joyce III, a native of Akron, Ohio, spent two seasons as associate head coach for the Dukes under Keith Dambrot from 2022 to 2024, helping guide Duquesne to an overall record of 45-25 (.643), including a 20-16 (.556) mark in the Atlantic 10, during that span. The Dukes made an appearance in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) before earning the automatic bid for the A-10 in the 2024 NCAA Championship by winning four games in five days en route to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship crown in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Barclays Center. Duquesne, as a No. 11 seed, made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 and earned its first victory in the championship since 1969 thanks to a 71-67 win over No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center Arena.

Transition – Last season, the first for Duquesne under the guidance of head coach
Dru Joyce III, the Dukes averaged 69.1 points per game. It's early, but the opening of the 2025-26 campaign has seen an about-face for the Duquesne offense. Entering Saturday's game against Northeastern for the Morgan & Morgan Classic in Akron, Ohio, the Dukes are averaging 86.2 points per game, a scoring offense that sits fourth in the Atlantic 10, just behind Richmond (87.0). It marks the highest scoring offense for Duquesne through the first five games of the year since 2015-16, when the Dukes eclipsed the 90-point plateau three times in the first five games (and four of the first seven) in averaging 87.0 points per contest. A key to the output so far? Getting out in transition. In a 92-78 victory over Loyola (Md.), Duquesne notched a season-high 26 points on the break and overall on the season are averaging 21.2 points per game in the category. Since finishing with 13 fast break points in the season opener against Niagara (Nov. 3), an 83-63 victory, the Dukes are averaging 23.3 points during such instances over the last four contests.
Offensive Flow – Senior guard
Tarence Guinyard has gotten off to as good of a start offensively as almost any member of the Dukes in the last 25 years. Entering Saturday's game, Guinyard, who leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring with an average of 20.6 points per game, owns the best scoring average for a Duquesne student-athlete through five games since former forward Wayne Smith (1998-2002) at the turn of the century. In the first five games of the 1999-2000 campaign, Smith, a four-year starter as a swingman who ranks fourth all-time on the Bluff with 1,820 career points, averaged 21.2 points. In addition to pacing the A-10 in scoring, Guinyard's name is also up-and-down the leaderboard in a number of categories. He leads the circuit in assists (5.8 per game) while ranking fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.41) and tied for sixth in steals (2.2 per contest). Guinyard also ranks eighth in the conference in three-point field goals made per game (2.60), ninth in minutes per game (31.4) and 12th in three-point field goal percentage (.481).
Medication Reflection – Forward
John Hugley IV was a huge spark for the Dukes early in a 92-78 victory over Loyola (Md.) (Nov. 19). The opening bucket of the contest, a layup from guard
Tarence Guinyard, came on an assist from Hugley IV, who then followed by scoring the next nine points of the game to help Duquesne open up an 11-2 advantage at the 17:26 mark of the first half and forced the Greyhounds to call timeout. Overall, Hugley IV scored 20 points in the win, hitting seven of his eight shots from the floor, including his only attempt from deep, while going 5-for-7 at the free-throw line. Hugley IV has now scored 20 or more points in three consecutive home games and overall this year is shooting a robust 61.2 percent (30-for-49), which ranks eighth in the Atlantic 10. However, among the top 25 in the A-10 in field goal percentage, Hugley IV owns the second highest total for field goals (30), trailing only Guinyard (31), who sits 17th at 56.4 percent (31-for-55).
Three's Company – Junior guard
Jimmie Williams has proven to be a capable piece to the rotation in the early going, as he missed his first career double-double by just a rebound in a 92-80 victory over Sacred Heart (Nov. 7). Before fouling out with 44.7 seconds to go, Williams contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, establishing a career high for boards. He added a career-high 18 points at Villanova (Nov. 15) in the final game of the Villanova Challenge and through five contests has supplied averages of 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds while ranking second for the Dukes in steals with nine. The trio of
John Hugley IV,
Tarence Guinyard and Williams, each transfers brought in for the 2025-26 season, have combined to average 49.2 points, 14.2 rebounds and 10.2 assists in five games.
Instant Impact – The latest recruiting class has paid dividends for Duquesne in the early going of the 2025-26 season, as have a pair of Dukes that have seen their first action on the Bluff after missing last year with injuries. The eight newcomers, which includes four transfers and a quartet of freshmen, as well as guard
Brandon Hall and forward
Alex Williams, have combined to account for 70.3 percent (303-of-431) of Duquesne's offense through the first five games of the season. A total of 17 double-figure scoring games have been tallied so far this season, with 12 received by a newcomer. Included in that is freshman guard
Dom Aekins, who scored 12 points in
an 87-81 overtime win over Queens (Nov. 11) for his first NCAA Division I double-figure scoring contest.
100/100/100 – Senior forward
David Dixon, one of just two players in program history with career totals of at least 100 blocks (133) and 100 dunks (109), added another 100 to the ledger at Villanova (Nov. 15). Checking into the game for the first time at the 15:34 mark, it marked the 100th career game for Dixon on the Bluff. Per
Elias Sports Bureau, Dixon is the active leader in the Atlantic 10 for games played and became the 30th active player in NCAA Division I this season with 100 career games played at the same school. Alex Karabun of Connecticut out of the BIG EAST is the active NCAA leader with 116 games played.
