Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University men's soccer team returned to action after a week off and also played its first Atlantic 10 contest in 11 days Wednesday, dropping a 6-1 decision to Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I., at the URI Soccer Complex. The Dukes slipped to 6-3-2 (.636) overall during the 2025 season, including 1-3 (.250) in conference action.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
The only score of the first half came on a penalty kick late in the period. Senior goalkeeper
Diego Chavez was issued a yellow card in an attempt to stop momentum by the Rams but inadvertently took out Tiago Barriguinha. Awarded a shot from the spot, Barriguinha connected, slipping the ball underneath Chavez on the left side to give URI a 1-0 advantage. It remained that way entering the second half, where Barriguinha was again awarded an opportunity for the spot after a hand ball in the box. Collecting his second goal of the game via penalty kick, Barriguinha registered the brace at 56:39 to give Rhode Island a 2-0 lead.
BREAKOUT
The score on the penalty kick energized the Rams, who added their third goal less than a minute later when Theo Harris found Sinan Bruning, who got open in the box and rolled it past Chavez to extend the lead to 3-0 for Rhode Island (3-6-3 | 2-1-1 Atlantic 10) at 57:31. The quick strikes continued for the Rams, as they found the back of the net three more times in the span of two minutes and 43 seconds. Two of those goals came from Mathias Taylor, who scored at 79:31, only to add another 31 seconds later on a feed from Everson Goglia. Kyler Vojvodic would complete the scoring for URI at 82:14 with his team-high fifth of the season.
