-The Duquesne volleyball team wraps up its three-match homestand this weekend, welcoming George Mason on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m. inside UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse during Atlantic 10 action.
- The Dukes played its first conference match in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, dropping a battle with Dayton, 3-0 in league action.
- The Flyers struck first, taking an early 1-0 lead in the match after capturing the opening set 25-18 behind a sharp .419 hitting percentage. In the second frame, Duquesne jumped out to a 9-6 advantage, fueled by three kills from senior
Ariel Helm, a point from sophomore
Mirabella Iriarte, and a service ace from junior
Chloe Wilmot.
- The Dukes extended their lead to 15-12 on back-to-back plays from Helm and sophomore
Emersen Schrom, but Dayton answered with a 6-3 run to even the score at 18-all. The Flyers then pulled ahead 22-19 before Duquesne responded with four straight points to seize a 23-22 edge.
- Senior
Carsyn Henschen ignited the surge with a kill, followed by a block from Helm and Wilmot. Senior
Maggie Colenbrander added a service ace, and Schrom and Helm capped the run with a rejection at the net. However, Dayton regained its rhythm late, stringing together three straight points to close out the set 25-23.
- The third set featured eight ties and two lead changes, with Dayton jumping out to a 10-6 lead behind kills from Corrie Anderson and Kamryn Hunt. Duquesne answered with five straight points to move back in front, 11-10. Iriarte sparked the run with back-to-back kills, followed by a point from Schrom, an ace from senior
Hanna Wilson, and a swing from Henschen.
- The Flyers responded, taking four of the next five points to build a 19-16 advantage, but consecutive attacking errors trimmed the gap to 19-18. The Dukes kept fighting, pulling within 24-22 on a service ace from senior
Maggie Colenbrander, before Hunt closed the door for Dayton with a kill to secure the set, 25-22.
- Sophomore
Emersen Schrom led the Dukes with a team-high 10 kills to go along with five digs and a block. Freshman
Karli Jordan followed with eight kills and two digs, while seniors
Ariel Helm and
Carsyn Henschen each added seven kills apiece, with Helm also contributing three blocks. Junior
Chloe Wilmot paced the offense with 32 assists and added four digs, and senior
Maggie Colenbrander anchored the back row with 10 digs and three service aces.
- Duquesne will hit the road for five consecutive matches after battling the Patriots, traveling to Chicago, Illinois to take on Loyola Chicago for a doubleheader on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11.
Scouting The Patriots – George Mason comes into the weekend on a three-match winning streak along with a 9-4 overall mark and a 2-0 record in league action. The Patriots are coming off a sweep over Saint Louis last weekend, capturing a 3-1 win on Friday night before sweeping the Billikens in straight sets on Saturday. George Mason is paced by a pair of attackers in Kiera Hamilton and Nia Thompson. Hamilton leads the team with 3.53 kills per set and 212.5 points while Thompson sits behind her at 2.87 kills and 151.5 points. Camryn Weldon and Ava Cheney pace the offence, each registering over 230 assists this season. Weldon is averaging 4.96 helpers per set while Cheney is sitting at 4.61. On the defensive, Chelsea Colter ranks 17
th in the country and second in the league with 71 total blocks while Autumn Martinez-Robinson leads the squad with 3.77 digs per set and 200 for the season.
Nation's Best, Standing Alone – Junior setter
Chloe Wilmot is putting together a standout season as the engine of the Duquesne offense. She currently leads all of NCAA Division I with 608 total assists and ranks fourth nationally with 11.23 assists per set. The Virginia native has recorded 14 straight matches with 30 or more assists, including seven outings of 40-plus. Earlier this season, Wilmot set a new career-high with 66 assists and notched a personal-best 19 digs in a five-set match at Miami (OH). She also became just the eighth player in program history to surpass 2,000 career assists, now sitting eighth all-time at Duquesne with 2,225 helpers. In addition to her playmaking, Wilmot has registered seven double-doubles, the second-most on the team, all while appearing in every set this season.
Back Row Bandits – Duquesne boasts a veteran back row anchored by seniors
Madison Grimm,
Maggie Colenbrander, and
Hanna Wilson. Grimm ranks second on the team with 152 digs and sits ninth in the Atlantic 10, averaging 2.81 per set. She has tallied seven double-digit dig matches this season and owns 1,149 career digs. Colenbrander has been a steady presence, ranking fifth on the team with 100 digs (1.85 per set). She has notched five double-digit dig performances, including back-to-back 10-dig outings entering the weekend. Wilson, returning strong after last season's injury, has been both productive and versatile. She ranks fourth on the team with 114 digs (2.43 per set) while leading Duquesne and sitting fifth in the A-10 with 24 service aces. Wilson has posted five double-digit dig matches and delivered four matches with 3+ aces, including a pair of five-ace efforts. Together, the trio has combined for over 360 digs.
Walls Up, Points Down - Middle blockers
Jordan Robertson and
Ariel Helm continue to set the tone at the net for Duquesne. Both rank among the Atlantic 10's top five in hitting percentage, with Robertson sitting third at .352 and Helm fifth at .332. Robertson also stands out defensively, averaging 1.13 blocks per set (fourth in the league) and ranking fifth with 54 total blocks. She has posted five or more blocks in seven matches, including three with seven. Helm isn't far behind, averaging just under a block per set with 53 total rejections, eighth in the conference. A steady veteran presence, she has amassed 373 career blocks, the fifth-most in program history, and is now just 27 shy of becoming the third Duke ever to reach 400 career blocks. Helm is also just one block assist away from becoming just the fourth player in program history to eclipse 300 for a career.
