Dukes Claim Eighth at Bucknell Fall Invitational

Duquesne closes out first tournament as NCAA Division I program

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's golf team concluded play in its first tournament as an NCAA Division I program Sunday, finishing eighth out of 13 teams at the Bucknell Fall Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa., at Bucknell Golf Club. The Dukes finished their final round Sunday with a 316 (+36) and wrapped up the 54-hole tournament at 944.
 
TEAM CHAMPION
Penn completed its wire-to-wire team title Sunday, finishing at 294 to close the tournament with an 874 (+34). Lehigh shot a 300 in the final round and claimed second at 906 (+66), with Bucknell (911), Towson (916) and UAlbany (935) rounding out the top five. Holy Cross (936) finished sixth, one stroke ahead of LIU (937), which finished seven strokes ahead of the Dukes. Rounding out the field was Wagner (952), Saint Francis U (964), Le Moyne (968), Bryant (984) and Saint Joseph's (1,210), which was also making its debut as an NCAA Division I program.
 
OLD HICKORY
Freshman Sasha Petrochko led the Dukes in their inaugural NCAA Division I competition, firing a 77 Sunday to finish the three rounds at 223 (+13). She wrapped up play Sunday by carding par on 11 holes, opening with a 40 on the front nine before closing with a 37 on the back. For her efforts she took home a top 10 finish individually, tying for eighth with Madison Pineda and Reese Hannon, both of Lehigh.  
 
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION
The Quakers had five of the top six individual finishers, led by Debby Chang, who won by two strokes over teammate Bridget O'Keefe at 217 (+7) during the tournament. O'Keefe closed at 219, followed by Callie Taylor of UAlbany, who tied for third with a 220 (+10) along with Claire Lu of Penn, playing as an individual, and Maggie Ni, also of the Quakers.
 
THE LINEUP
Junior Lindsey Powanda matched her 79 from round two to finish the Bucknell Fall Invitational at 239, four strokes behind freshman Katie Caryl, who finished 27th individually at 235. Freshmen Abby Slankster and Paige Meyers each recorded their best rounds of the tournament Sunday in round three, with Slankster posting an 80 to finish at 247 and Meyers closing with an 86 to record a 261. Playing as an individual, freshman Katie Fodale also finished with a 239 along with Powanda after shooting an 83 Sunday.
 
UP NEXT
Duquesne's first tournament in school history in the books, the Dukes will travel to Boardman, Ohio, Sunday, Sept. 22, and Monday, Sept. 23, to take part in the Roseann Schwartz Invitational. The event is hosted by Youngstown State and will take place at Millcreek Golf Course (North).
