Women's Tennis Drops Opening Round at A-10 Championships

#10 Dukes fall to #7 Dayton, 4-0

Orlando, Fla. – The 10th seeded Duquesne University women's tennis team opened play at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Thursday afternoon, dropping its first-round contest to No. 7 Dayton, 4-0 at the UTSA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

With the loss, the Dukes conclude the season 7-13 overall, with a 1-4 mark against conference foes.

The Flyers took early control in doubles competition, capturing victories at the second and third spot to take the point. Sophomore Jasa Roka and freshman Mila Badics would fall to Marra Bruce and Elizabeth Hamilton, 6-2 at number two doubles while senior Ellen Shanahan and sophomore Taisia Yakunina dropped a 6-4 decision to Erica Wojcikiewicz and Laura Greb in the final slot. At the fist position, graduate student Daniela Latoni and junior Kaya Rand were up 5-4 on Natalie Osiecki and Neena Katauskas before their match was recorded unfinished.

In singles competition, Dayton jumped out to a quick victory at the #3 singles spot before securing two more for the match win. Badics battled back against Bruce but came up short, 1-6, 6-1, 3-6 at the second slot as Rand dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Hamilton at the fourth position. Latoni and Osiecki battled at the No. 1 spot 7-6 (6), 0-5 as Shanahan was facing Wojcikiewicz at fifth singles 5-7, 4-3. Yakunina was at the last spot against Greb where they were 6-4, 2-5. All three of those matches were recorded unfinished.
