PITTSBURGH -- The Duquesne University lacrosse team scored five goals in the opening seven minutes and built a 9-2 halftime lead on way to securing its second straight win, 17-13 over Youngstown State on Thursday evening at Rooney Field.
Graduate student
Jillian Caroselli spearheaded the early rally with a hat trick in the first quarter, including back-to-back goals at the 12:33 and 10:19 marks.
Seven Dukes scored for the second straight game, paced once again by redshirt sophomore
Corinne Webb with four - three of which came in the first half. Webb has now scored in all three games and has tallied four goals in back-to-back contests.
Webb (4) and Caroselli (3) were joined in the hat trick club by graduate transfer
Lindsay Newton and sophomore
Emma Raines with three goals apiece. It was the first goals of the season for Caroselli, the second straight hat trick for Newton in two career games at Rooney Field, and first career hat trick for Raines - a transfer from Saint Joseph's.
Tristen Chang, a senior transfer from Youngstown State, netted her first two goals as a Duke against her previous team, while
Mackenzie Leszczynski and
Chloe Holmes added one score each.
Duquesne dished out a total of 11 assists on its 17 goals, the most as a team since March 16, 2021. Senior
Emelie Curtis led the passing party with four assists, giving her nine assists in the past two games. Leszczynski and
Lizzie Cleary had two assists each, while Caroselli, Newton and
Gracin Emerson tallied one assist apiece. Emerson's was her first collegiate point. Cleary also racked up a team-leading five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Eight of the nine first-half goals for DU were assisted.
Newton got the scoring started 68 seconds into the game and the Dukes never looked back. Duquesne stretched it to 5-0 with 8:21 still to play in the first quarter and held a five-plus goal lead all the way until YSU made it 17-13 with two minutes left.
The Dukes led by as many as eight twice in the game (12-4 at the 9:19 mark in the third quarter and 17-9 with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter).
Duquesne posted a 15-4 shot on goal advantage in the dominating first half and went on to finish the game with a 28-17 edge in shots on goal (36-22 in overall shots).
Emily King and Leszczynski led all players with seven draw controls each, as the Dukes held a +5 margin (19-14) in draw controls.
Rachel O'Toole got the win in goal, playing 45 minutes, and made three saves.
Megan LaBorne handled the fourth quarter and kept the Dukes in front while making one save.
UP NEXT
Duquesne will have a quick turnaround and be back in action on Saturday at 12 pm against Detroit Mercy at Rooney Field. The Dukes will celebrate Senior Day and have a pregame recognition ceremony before warm ups (approx. 10:30 am).
