Dukes Celebrate Senior Day With 13-7 Win Over Detroit Mercy

PITTSBURGH -- The Duquesne University lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 13-7 win over Detroit Mercy at Rooney Field. Lindsay Newton scored two and a half minutes into the game and the Dukes never trailed on way to their third straight victory.

After a 7-3 Duquesne lead at the half, the Titans (0-2) scored three straight goals and narrowed the margin to one (7-6) at the 5:28 mark in the third quarter. The Dukes answered with six straight goals, four of which in the opening six minutes of the fourth quarter, to take back control and secure the win.

Duquesne improves to 3-1 on the season, the best start since 4-0 in 2019 (Coach Desrosiers first season) and it is just the third time (2014 & '19) that DU has recorded three wins in the first four games of a season since 2001.

Corinne Webb led the way scoring four goals for the third straight game, bringing her season total to a team-leading 13. She also dished out two assists for a game-high six points.

Senior Emelie Curtis celebrated her Senior Day with five points off two goals and three assists. It is Curtis' third straight game with three-plus assists and now has 13 through the first four games of the year. Her two goals tie a career-high mark and they came in back-to-back fashion just over a minute apart at the 11:33 and 10:31 marks of the second quarter expanding the early DU lead to 5-2.

Mackenzie Leszczynski tallied her second hat trick of the season along with an assist, while Senior Day honorees Jillian Caroselli (2), Tristen Chang (1), and Newton (1) all added scores. Chang and Newton also had an assist apiece.

Gracin Emerson dished out an assist on the on the final goal of the day by Webb, her second straight game with an assist. 

The last three goals scored by the Dukes were with a woman advantage. Webb netted each of the last two, 20 seconds apart (9:51 & 9:31 in the fourth quarter) to give DU its largest lead of the day (+7 / 13-6).

Duquesne outshot the Titans 37-17, a season-high mark for DU, with a 29-12 advantage in shots on goal. Leszczynski led all players with 10 shots, seven of which on target, while Webb fired eight times with six on frame. Ten different Dukes recorded at least one shot.

Hanna Pawela paced the defense with eight of the team's 19 caused turnovers, tied her career-high with eight ground balls, and scooped five draw controls, all game-highs. 

Rachel O'Toole made five saves and earned the win in goal in 55 minutes of action, while Megan LaBorne finished off the last five minutes in the cage.

The Dukes honored Jillian Caroselli, Lindsay Newton, Rachel O'Toole, Miranda Held, Emelie Curtis, Emily O'Donnell, Nina Burns, and Tristen Chang with a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
