Opening Tip

 
- The Duquesne University men's basketball team opens a three-game homestand at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Saint Peter's.
 
- The Dukes picked up their first win of the Dru Joyce III era to close out play in the Cayman Islands Classic in their last outing with a 67-54 victory over Old Dominion (Nov. 26) at John Gray Gymnasium in George Town, Grand Cayman.
 
- Junior forward Matúš Hronský led four players in double figures in the win over the Monarchs by matching a career high with 13 points off the bench, connecting for five of his nine shots from the field, including a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
 
- Also in the victory over ODU, redshirt junior guard Maximus Edwards scored 11 points, while forwards Jahsean Corbett and Chabi Barre each contributed 10. For Barre, it marked his first double-figure scoring effort at the NCAA Division I level as he shot 5-for-7 from the floor in the triumph while also grabbing seven rebounds.
 
- On the glass against Old Dominion, junior forward David Dixon established a career high with 12 boards, including four offensive caroms, as Duquesne owned a 41-37 edge in rebounds.
 
- The 2024-25 season marks the 109th year of Duquesne basketball. The Dukes started play in 1913-14 (DU did not field a team in 1944-45-46 due to World War II).
 
- Duquesne, which has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1971 & 1972, is looking to record three consecutive 20-win campaigns for the first time since finishing with four straight 20-win seasons from 1952 to 1955. The Dukes are also 13 wins shy of 1,500 as an NCAA program.
 
- The leading active scorer for the Dukes is senior forward Jahsean Corbett, who owns career totals of 1,357 points and 755 rebounds. Corbett amassed totals of 1,303 points and 725 rebounds in three seasons at Chicago State prior to transferring to Duquesne.
 
- Jahsean Corbett has appeared in 100 career games at the NCAA Division I level, each as a member of the starting lineup. His 100th career start came in a 67-54 win for the Dukes over Old Dominion in the final game of the Cayman Islands Classic.
 
- The closest member of the Dukes to 1,000 career points is redshirt junior guard Maximus Edwards, who enters Tuesday's game with 781 career points. Named the 2023 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Edwards scored 722 in two seasons at George Washington before transferring to Duquesne.
 
- The Dukes will also host Delaware (Dec. 6) and Maine (Dec. 11) as part of their three-homestand before their final game of the 2024-25 regular season at a neutral site with a 6:00 p.m. tip Saturday, Dec. 14, against Towson in Akron, Ohio, at Lebron James Arena at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.  
 
At The Helm – Dru Joyce III was named the 18th head coach in the 109-year history of Duquesne basketball March 28, 2024. Joyce III, a native of Akron, Ohio, spent two seasons as associate head coach for the Dukes under Keith Dambrot from 2022 to 2024, helping guide Duquesne to an overall record of 45-25 (.643), including a 20-16 (.556) mark in the Atlantic 10, during that span. The Dukes made an appearance in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) before earning the automatic bid for the A-10 in the 2024 NCAA Championship by winning four games in five days en route to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship crown in Brooklyn, N.Y., at the Barclays Center. Duquesne, as a No. 11 seed, made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1977 and earned its first victory in the championship since 1969 thanks to a 71-67 win over No. 6 seed BYU in Omaha, Neb., at CHI Health Center Arena. 
 
Scouting the Peacocks – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member ... located in Jersey City, N.J. ... Duquesne and SPU meet for the second consecutive season, with the Dukes earning a 68-59 victory, Dec. 8, 2023, at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse ... In that contest former guard Dae Dae Grant led three players in double figures with 19 points on the strength of a 10-for-10 performance at the free-throw line ... Former guard Jimmy Clark III added 12 points, five assists and six steals in the triumph ... Off the bench, forward Fousseyni Drame, who began his career at SPU, posted 11 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals ... Last year's meeting between the Dukes and Peacocks was the first since 1980, a 34-33 win for Saint Peter's as part of the 1980 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) ... Duquesne eclipsed 100 points in each of the first three meetings against Saint Peter's, including 70 in the second half of a 127-85 win at Madison Square Garden in the lone "road" game for the Dukes against the Peacocks ... Duquesne's first international player, Ruben Montanez (Puerto Rico), scored 32 points in a 127-85 win over SPU and in that game established the program single-game record for field goal percentage (minimum 15 attempts) at 88.2 percent (15-for-17) ... Montanez went on to get drafted in the NBA (Chicago Bulls) and ABA (Virginia Squires) after his Duquesne career in 1973.
 
Cayman Islands Classic Leftovers – Duquesne finished 1-2 as part of the Cayman Islands Classic and finished in seventh place thanks to its win over Old Dominion ... The Dukes established season highs in multiple specialty stats during their three games of the Cayman Islands Classic, including 19 second chance points against South Dakota State and 21 points on the break against Hampton ... The Dukes and Jackrabbits were tied nine times, a season high for Duquesne, while the contest against the Pirates featured a season-high 12 lead changes ... Boston College earned a 63-61 victory over Boise State to claim the title of the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic ... Joshua Beadle drilled a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining to lift the Eagles over the Broncos in the championship game ... In the game for third place, South Dakota State defeated Missouri State, 75-55 ... High Point edged Hampton, 76-73, in the game for fifth place ... Earning MVP honors of the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic was Donald Hand, Jr., of Boston College, who averaged 12.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists during three games of the tournament ... Hampton guard Noah Farrakhan averaged 21.0 points in three games of the Cayman Islands Classic to lead all scorers in the tournament ... Oscar Cluff of South Dakota State finished with three double-doubles at the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic, averaging 18.7 points and 12.3 rebounds while also registering 11 assists (3.7 pg) and four blocked shots.
 
Old Dominion Leftovers – Duquesne improved to 2-5 (.286) all-time against ODU and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Monarchs ... The Dukes established season highs in points in the paint (40) and points off turnovers (20) against Old Dominion ... The game featured three ties and four lead changes ... Duquesne held ODU to 28 percent (7-for-25) shooting in the first half in taking a 26-19 halftime lead, while the Monarchs converted just 32.8 percent (21-for-64) of their shots overall ... The 64 attempts from the field by ODU marked a season high by a Duquesne opponent ... The Dukes finished with season lows in three-point field goals (4) as well as three-point attempts (13) ... Devin Ceaser led all scorers in the game with 23 points (on 20 shots) for Old Dominion.
 
Defense Wins Championships – The Dukes enter December seemingly rounding into form defensively, as during its three games as part of the Cayman Islands Classic opponents averaged 63.0 points per contest. The three foes combined to convert just 39.4 percent (65-for-165) of its shots from the field, including an 18-for-57 (31.6%) performance from beyond the arc. Duquesne has won 29 consecutive games dating back to the 2018-19 campaign when holding opponents to under 60 points thanks to a 67-54 win over Old Dominion to close out the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic. Included in that stretch is a perfect 17-0 mark in three years Dru Joyce III has been a member of the coaching staff on the Bluff, including two years as associate head coach from 2022 to 2024.
 
Jake N Shake – Jake DiMichele earned a spot on the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic All-Tournament Team, as in three games the sophomore guard averaged 9.0 points while also handing out five assists and registering four steals. He led the Dukes against Hampton with 13 points off the bench after contributing 10 points in the opener against South Dakota State and over the three games of the tournament shot 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from the field. Overall this season, DiMichele has converted an even 50 percent (29-for-58) of his shots from the floor, which ranks 24th in the Atlantic 10.
 
Dinkin Donuts – Senior guard Tre Dinkins III, meanwhile, led Duquesne in scoring over the course of three games at the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic, averaging 11.0 points per contest while also registering a team-high nine assists (3.0 pg), three steals and shooting 80 percent (8-for-10) at the free-throw line. Dinkins III helped seal the win over Old Dominion by going 7-for-8 at the stripe in the final 4:45 of action and enters Tuesday's game against Saint Peter's as the top scorer for the Dukes at 11.1 points per game. Over his last five games, each as a member of the starting lineup, Dinkins III is averaging 10.3 points and 2.6 assists per contest while shooting 84.2 percent (16-for-19) at the free-throw line.
 
Little Sun – A number of Dukes are capable of filling the basket on a given night, and that was never more evident than in a 67-54 victory over Old Dominion that helped Duquesne earn its first win of the 2024-25 season in closing out the Cayman Islands Classic. Off the bench, junior forward Matúš Hronský paced the Dukes in their win over the Monarchs by matching a career high with 13 points, including a pair of dunks in the closing minutes that contributed to sealing the victory. The only other double-figure scoring effort for Hronský during his time on the Bluff came in his Duquesne debut, a 91-63 win over Montana, Nov. 8, 2022, that opened the 2022-23 season for the Dukes. In that contest, playing as the backup point guard, Hronský scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 2-for-3 performance from downtown. Hronský has opened the 2024-25 season having shot 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from beyond the arc, which leads the Dukes.
 
Welcome Back – Duquesne received a boost in its frontcourt at the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic with the return of junior forward Chabi Barre, who missed the first four games of the year due to injury. Barre was a presence in the paint over the course of the three games, averaging 6.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in the tournament while also knocking down 64.3 percent (9-of-14) of his attempts from the floor. Barre teamed with junior forward Matúš Hronský to supply production off the bench in a 67-54 win over Old Dominion, registering his first NCAA Division I double-figure scoring effort with 10 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. In addition to establishing a career-high in scoring in the win over the Monarchs, Barre set a new personal standard in rebounds with 11 against Hampton (Nov. 25) while also matching a career high with four blocks against the Pirates. In three games of the 2024 Cayman Islands Classic, Barre finished with six rejections and of his 20 rebounds during the tournament, 11 (55%) came on the offensive glass.
 
Depth Charge – Thanks to the performances from forwards Matúš Hronský and Chabi Barre in a 67-54 win over Old Dominion that closed out play in the Cayman Islands Classic, a total of eight different Dukes have scored in double figures in the first seven games of the 2024-25 season. Duquesne has received 18 double-figure scoring efforts so far this season, including four each from guards Jake DiMichele and Maximus Edwards, which leads the Dukes.
 
Paint By Numbers – Duquesne was able to garner its first win of the 2024-25 season with a 67-54 triumph over Old Dominion to close out the Cayman Islands Classic due to its work down low. The Dukes owned a 40-30 edge in points in the paint, establishing a season high in the category. Duquesne has won eight consecutive games dating back to the beginning of the 2022-23 season when scoring at least 40 points in the paint and through seven games this year is averaging 30.0 points per contest down low.
