Duquesne Finishes Eighth at UNCG Collegiate

Junior Lindsey Powanda closes consistent fall to pace Dukes in final fall tournament

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University women's golf team closed its first fall season in program history Tuesday, finishing eighth at the UNCG Collegiate. Over the course of 54 holes at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Dukes posted a team score of 946.
 
TEAM LEADERBOARD
High Point won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 851 (-13), one of two teams to finish under par. The host Spartans earned second, finishing four strokes behind the Panthers at 855 (-9). Longwood (888), Marshall (894) and North Carolina A&T (900) rounded out the top five, with Winthrop (906), North Carolina Central (921), Duquesne and The Citadel (1,011) concluding the field.
 
POWWOW
The Dukes were led by at the UNCG Collegiate by junior Lindsey Powanda, who provided steady play for Duquesne throughout the fall. Powanda opened with a 77 (+5) and added a 74 (+2) in the second round Monday before closing the tournament Tuesday at 79 (+7). For the 54 holes she handed in a 230 and was one of five student-athletes to tie for 28th individually. Also finishing with a 230 was Sidney Renville and Mya Smith of North Carolina Central, Aubri Braecklein of High Point and Amelie Tolf of Winthrop. Powanda notched five birdies during the tournament, including two on back-to-back holes in the second round. Three of her five birdies came on a par five, including No. 11. The longest hole on the course at 504 yards, Powanda notched a birdie on the hole in each of the first and second rounds.
 
TWEET DECK
As a team, Duquesne finished fifth in the tournament in birdies (31) as well as eighth in pars (125). Leading the Dukes in birdies was freshman Sasha Petrochko, who registered nine over the course of the three rounds. Duquesne also got seven birdies each from freshmen Katie Caryl and Paige Meyers. Petrochko and Caryl, playing as an individual, each tied for 36th individually with scores of 234. Petrochko opened with a 79 before firing a 73 (+1), including three consecutive birdies to open the round, while concluding with an 82. Caryl finished 76-75-83 during the three rounds, including consecutive birdies to open the second round on the 10th and 11th.
 
THE LINEUP
Freshman Katie Fodale finished just three strokes behind Petrochko and Caryl at 237 (76-77-84). She posted a pair of birdies in the first round on consecutive holes (two and three) before adding four more in round two. Meyers closed at 252 (80-87-85) for Duquesne, while freshman Abby Slankster concluded the fall with a 256 (85-80-91) at the UNCG Collegiate. She finished with four birdies for the Dukes.
 
UP NEXT
The 2024 fall season complete, Duquesne begins prep for the spring 2025 season, which culminates with the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship at Evermore Resort in Orlando, Fla., April 17-19.
