MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Duquesne volleyball moved to 5-1 on the season after a four-set win against nearby rival Robert Morris on Saturday night. Graduate transfer Morgan Gish's 18 kills and 14 digs, along with another new career high in assists for freshman Chloe Wilmot at 56 put the Dukes past the Colonials.
The Dukes took the first set, which it has done in all matches so far except one, 25-19. The Dukes dominated the stat sheet, boasting a .286 hit percentage compared to the Colonials' .057, as well as having half the attack errors of RMU.
Despite holding a 24-19 lead late in set two, the Dukes would drop the second 26-24 after surrendering seven unanswered points. Robert Morris' hit percentage was .386 in the set, which was better than the .271 of Duquesne.
The Dukes took the third set 25-21 with a .500 hitting percentage and only one attack error, compared to the eight errors the Colonials had. Then followed it with a match-clinching 25-21 triumph in the fourth frame.
In addition to Gish and Wilmot, freshmen Avery Hobson and Jordan Robertson tallied 18 and 10 kills respectively. Hobson added 11 digs as well. Sophomore Madison Grimm led the team in digs with 16.
The Dukes early season success shows a strong improvement from last season, as it took 23 matches in 2022 to reach five wins and now they have done it in 2023 through just six matches.
