BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duquesne University volleyball team fell in three sets to the East Carolina Pirates on Friday in the opening game of the Virginia Tech Classic.
Duquesne, playing its first game 13 days, only had two leads in the match, each of which came after winning the first point of a set. Freshman
Avery Hobson added eight kills to her team-leading count, bumping it up to 97 on the young season. Hobson also led the defense with 11 digs, which moved her into second on the team, behind sophomore
Madison Grimm, who charted 10 digs in the loss.
Chloe Wilmot dished out 20 assists and had two aces for the Dukes.
ECU (8-2, 0-0 AAC) was led by senior Fran McBride, who was named Tournament MVP in the Hampton Inn and Suites Seahawk Classic last weekend, with a game-high 10 kills. She was followed by freshman Aulie Huff's nine kills, and sophomore Angeles Alderete's eight kills.
The Dukes, now 5-2, will play tomorrow at 1 PM in the third-place game against the loser of the Virginia Tech vs. Queens game.
