Dukes Drop Non-Conference Tilt to Xavier

PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne University men's soccer team saw a three-game unbeaten streak at home this season get snapped by the Xavier Musketeers, who completed a wire-to-wire 2-0 win over the Dukes (4-2-1) Tuesday afternoon at Arthur J. Rooney Field.

The Musketeers (4-2-1) controlled the pace of play for most of the game, and they found the back of the net twice in the first half. First, Jerome Jolly took a touch from Taylor Rhinehart and scored a beautiful goal from beyond the box to give Xavier a 1-0 lead just 22 minutes in. Three minutes later, Xavier converted upon chaos in front of Zolton Nagy and they were rewarded as Sam Bennett put the ball into his own net, landing the Musketeers a 2-0 lead.

Xavier did not let up in the second half, and outshot Duquesne 8-3. They couldn't push another goal across, and neither could the Dukes, and that was how things ended.

Overall, the Musketeers outshot Duquesne 5-2 in shots on goal. Zolton Nagy's totaled four saves in 90 minutes between the posts for DU. Jonny Mennell had only two saves for Xavier, but they each served as an important note in the 19th and 83rd minutes. Zach Mowa was the only Duke with multiple shot attempts, charting two including the late chance for DU.

Duquesne will hit the road to play Loyola Chicago on Saturday at 3 PM. Following that, they have a 5 PM match on Sept. 30th at St. Josephs and a 7 PM tilt on Oct. 4th at Davidson.
