BY THE NUMBERS

Stats Comparison - WSOC 8-23-2023 vs. YSU

LAST TIME OUT

  • Duquesne dominated American with a 5-0 victory on Saturday in its home opener.

  • Jaimi Araujo got the day started with a penalty kick goal in the sixth minute, but it took a little while for the Dukes to get that second goal. After stingy defense by American, some offsides calls, and a couple off-target shots, DU broke through for the second score in the 42nd minute by Brianna Moore and never looked back.

  • Maya Matesa netted a pair of goals in a span of just over 10 minutes (54' and 65') to break it open, then Kayala Leseck scored her first career goal in the 78th minute.

  • All of the scores were assisted except for the PK, including a double assist on the Moore goal in the 42nd minute from Mackenie Muir and Libby Majka. Cami Taylor recorded the assist on the first Matesa goal, then Brook Kirstein set up the Matesa header in the 65th on a corner kick.

  • The Dukes outshot the Eagles 18-4 and 9-2 on goal, bouncing back from a 20-5 (8-2 on goal) disadvantage in the season opener at Ohio.

  • Duquesne held American to zero corner kicks in the game and allowed just one shot in the second half.

  • DU had 28 players see action in the home opener … 25 played in the season opener at Ohio.

MOST GOALS SINCE ...

  • The five goals were the most in a game since Sept. 15, 2019 (a 6-0 win vs. Youngstown State) and the most in a home opener since 2005 (a 7-0 win over Vermont).

  • The home opener was the third time in the Coach Alvine era (12th season) that Duquesne has scored five or more goals in a game (6-0 win at Saint Francis on Sept. 23, 2016 and the YSU victory in 2019).

THE PENGUINS

  • Youngstown State, members of the Horizon League, enter Rooney Field unbeaten in the young 2023 season. YSU downed Saint Francis (3-1) in the opener on the road and is coming off a 1-0 victory over Akron in its first home game.

  • Four different players have accounted for the four goals this season, all of which have been assisted by four different players.

  • Brooklynn Kirkpatrick, a senior goalkeeper, has six saves and is one win away from tying the all-time record (14) at YSU.

  • The Penguins were picked to finish fourth in the 11-team Horizon League and earned one first-place vote.

  • Abriana Rondin, an All-Horizon League Second Team selection, and Taylor Berry an All-Freshman Team honoree, return to the lineup this fall.

  • YSU closed out the 2022 regular season with a 5-1-1 record and made a run to its league championship game before falling 1-0 to Milwaukee.

  • The Penguins host Canisius on Sunday in their next match.

THE SERIES

  • Duquesne is 10-1-2 all-time against Youngstown State dating to the 1996 season.

  • The Dukes have won three straight, including 2-1 victories in each of the last two seasons … The only loss (0-1) came in 2012 … DU is 7-1-1 in home games against YSU.

  • DU has not allowed more than one goal to YSU in any of the 13 meetings.

ALL-TIME LEADERBOARD

  • Graduate student forward Jaimi Araujo moved into a tie for 10th in career goals at DU with Shaina Geisler, after her PK goal last time out, the first goal of the 2023 season for DU, bringing her career total to 14.

  • Sarah Nicholson (1995-98) is in 9th with 15 … The all-time leader at DU is Katie O'Conner (2015-18) with 25.

SHUTOUT VICTORY

  • DU tied their shutout win total from last season already after posting just one shutout victory in 2022, a 1-0 win at Richmond.

  • The Dukes last had multiple shutout wins in a season in the 2021 spring season with three.

BACK ON THE BLUFF

  • Duquesne returns all but one of their nine goal scorers from last year's squad that reached the first Atlantic 10 postseason tournament since 2019. The 2022 Dukes finished with a 6-7-3 overall and 4-3-3 conference record, bowing out of the A-10 Tournament in the first round (0-2 loss at Davidson).

  • Duquesne had 20 different players start at least one match last season and returns 15 of them.

  • Mackenzie Muir and Margey Brown were both named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team a year ago and are back for their sophomore campaigns.

  • Maddy Neundorfer returns for her junior season in net for DU. Neundorfer ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in saves (96) and saves per game (6.0) in 2022, starting all 16 games. The Monroeville, Pa. played all 90 minutes between the posts in the season opener on Thursday and made five saves.

NEWCOMERS RIGHT IN THE MIX

  • Coach Alvine brought in a talented recruiting class of 11 new players to bolster the long list of returners.

  • Anna Campanella, a graduate transfer that spent time at Kent State and the past three seasons at Boise State, earned a season-opening start at Ohio, alongside freshman Jaydn Sharpless, a transfer from Georgia State, were the lone newcomers to crack the starting XI and have done so in both games to start the year.

SISTER, SISTER

  • The Dukes roster includes three sets of sisters this season. Kayla and her twin sister Skylar Leseck are freshman from Moon Township, Pa., Anna (freshman) and Emma Bundy (junior) from Wexford, Pa., and Anna (graduate student) and Ally Campanella (junior) from Hudson, Ohio.

  • Twins Kayla and Skylar Leseck are one of 16 twins playing Division I soccer this season.

WINNINGEST COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORY

  • Duquesne is led by 12th year head coach Al Alvine.

  • Alvine is the winningest coach in program history with a 77-91-25 overall record on the Bluff and 40-51-13 mark in Atlantic 10 play.

  • Alvine doubled the Dukes win total from 2011 in his first season. He has led DU to five A-10 Tournament appearances. In 2015, he coached the Dukes to their first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship and NCAA Tourament appearance

PRESEASON POLL

  • Duquesne was picked to finish seventh in the 15-team Atlantic 10 Conference, its highest preseason rank since 2018.

  • Defending regular season and tournament champion, St. Louis is expected to repeat grabbing 14 of the 15 first-place votes.

UP NEXT

  • Duquesne will begin a tough road stretch against NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago on Sunday with a trip to West Virginia. Kick off is set for 1 pm from Morgantown.
