Women's Track and Field Sets Two School Records at Colonial Relays

Willis breaks own 100m dash record; 4x1500m relay team takes down 21-year-old record

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Duquesne University women's track and field team set two school records this weekend at the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary. Junior Alyssa Willis broke her own top time in the 100m dash and the 4x1500m relay team took down a 21-year-old record.

Willis crossed the line in 11.94 to place sixth in the 100m dash. Each of the top-eight finishers were between 11.68 and 11.99. Willis becomes the first Duke to ever run a sub-12 second 100m, breaking her own record of 12.09 set last year.

The 4x1500m relay team including Olivia Wilson, Ryley Schwalm, Kathryn Saum, and Laura Ehrenberger also set a new school record with a 19:27.87 in eighth place, snapping a long-standing record that stood since 2002 by more than 10 seconds.

As a team, the Dukes totaled 43 points, coming in sixth out of 33 schools.

Hannah Seitzinger won the 800m invitational with a 2:07.76, crossing the line nearly five seconds ahead of second place. The dominating effort was good for second all-time in DU history. Mara Whalen placed sixth in the race with a 2:14.16.

Sadie Wetzel won the high jump invitational clearing 1.67m, her second straight meet title.

Ezra Johnson-Mills finished runner-up in the hammer throw posting a 44.81 toss on her third and final attempt, out-marking her first throw by more than three meters.

Freshman Megan Penrod placed third in the javelin with a mark of 33.33m on her second throw, while Emily Brozeski threw a 30.66m on her first attempt and it would hold as her best of the weekend, finishing in eighth place. Brozeski also had an eighth-place finish in the long jump invitational, where she posted her best mark on her first attempt again, leaping 5.48m. Then, Brozeski rounded out an action-packed weekend with a ninth-place finish in the 100m hurdles, running a 14.48.

Haley Hamilton ran a 10:43.66 in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in fourth place.

Jamelah Carswell came in fifth place in the open long jump, landing at 5.42m on her final opportunity. Carswell also recorded an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.50.

Rachel Koonmen charted an 11.56m shot put placing eighth in the open event, while Madelyn Moretti fouled out of the invitational. Moretti bounced back with an eighth-place finish in the discus invitational, posting a 38.21m mark.

Halle Walcutt threw a 33.60m in the open discus event, placing eighth.

Schwalm (4:47.19) and Saum (4:47.26), both freshman, finished neck-and-neck in the 1500m run coming in eighth and ninth place, respectively. Six runners finished within the same second (4:47) as Schwalm and Saum, but they were able to hold on for a pair of top-10 finishes.

The 4x100m relay team of Faith Mucci, Brozeski, Amy Allen, and Willis ran a 47.26 finishing in sixth place, the third-best time ever at DU.

The 4x400m relay came in third place, as Willis, Allen, Whalen, and Seitzinger posted a 3:50.56.

The 4x200m relay featuring Kaylin Cousin, Carswell, Walcutt, and Brozeski came in 10th place charted a 1:45.23.

Duquesne returns to the Steel City for its next meet on Thursday, April 13, hosted by Carnegie Mellon.
