Dukes Drop Home Match to VCU

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne University women's lacrosse team lost an Atlantic 10 matchup to VCU, 18-8, on Saturday at Rooney Field.

The Rams (6-6, 2-3) scored the first seven goals of the game holding the Dukes (1-11, 0-5) off the board for the first 18 minutes of the game and never looked back. VCU maintained at least a five-goal cushion the rest of the way cruising to victory on the road.

Chelsea Evans, Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw, and Mackenzie Leszczynski all had two goals in the game, while Rodriguez-Shaw led DU with four points charting two assists as well. Emelie Curtis found the back of the net and dished out an assist, then Jillian Caroselli added a late, short-handed score to round out the Dukes tallies.

Evans broke the ice for Duquesne with just under 12 minutes to play in the second quarter from the free position. The Dukes put together a three-goal rally with two goals in the final four minutes of the first half then opened the second-half with a score just over two minutes in to make it 9-4, but it would be the only multi-goal stretch of the game for DU.

Curtis started the 3-0 spurt with her first score of the season off an assist from Rodriguez-Shaw, then Leszczynski fired in a goal at the 1:47 mark of the first half, and Rodriguez-Shaw netted her 40th goal of the season to begin the second half on an assist from Curtis.

Rodriguez-Shaw and Leszczynski both found the back of the net once more in the third quarter, while Evans netted her second FP goal of the game at 12:53 in the fourth frame and Caroselli's short-handed goal off a dish from Rodriguez-Shaw came with just over five and a half minutes remaining.

VCU outshot the Dukes 37-19 and 25-10 on goal, while holding a +9-turnover margin (22-13). The Rams went 8-for-9 from the free position, while Duquesne capitalized on three of its five attempts from the FP.

The Dukes will be on the road for the next two games, traveling to UMass next Saturday (April 8) and La Salle the following weekend (April 15). Both start times are scheduled for 1 p.m.
