PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne University women's lacrosse team fell to Atlantic 10 leading and No. 15-ranked UMass, 17-5, on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
The Minutewomen jumped ahead 13-0 in the first half and never looked back. The Dukes battled in the second half, outscoring UMass 5-4, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome.
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw and
Mackenzie Leszczynski netted two goals each to lead the Duquesne offense, while
Jillian Caroselli tallied the fifth score in the final seconds of the game extending her scoring streak to four straight games.
Rodriguez-Shaw got the Dukes on the board two and a half minutes into the second half with a short-handed goal, then was back at it to start the fourth quarter with a driving score to clinch a new career-high with 56 points on the season and tie her freshman-year total of 43 goals.
The Dukes defense regrouped after a rough opening 30 minutes to allow just one score in the third period. Leszczynski got on the scoresheet with an unassisted goal at the three-minute mark in the third period, then added a free-position score with just over three to play in the fourth frame.
In addition to her two goals, Rodriguez-Shaw scooped up a career-best five ground balls.
Hanna Pawela forced a team-leading five turnovers for the Dukes defense.
Duquesne travels to Philadelphia, Pa. next Saturday to take on La Salle. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
