WILMINGTON, Del. – The Duquesne women's basketball team fell to George Washington in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, losing 71-68 on a last-second bucket by the Colonials.
Despite the loss, sophomore guard
Megan McConnell had a record-setting night. With her fourth rebound of the game, she broke the Duquesne record for most rebounds in a season. She is now the only player in Duquesne history with 300 or more rebounds in a year.
She ended the night with a team-high 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, two steals and only one turnover – a normal day at the office for her.
Junior forward
Ayanna Townsend had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Junior center
Precious Johnson had 12 points herself.
In a true back-and-forth game with six lead changes and nearly seven minutes spent tied up, the two teams traded punches all night. Duquesne shot 49 percent from the field while GW shot 45 percent, and both squads shot just above 40 percent from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team got any separation early, as indicated by the 11-11 score at the first media timeout. Two early three-pointers by McConnell carried the offense until Townsend took over offensively for the Dukes, scoring their last eight points of the first quarter. Despite her success in the paint, Duquesne still trailed, 20-19, after one quarter.
The second quarter didn't start great for the Dukes, but a couple late triples got them within three at halftime. With 2:34 left in the first half, McConnell grabbed her 299
th rebound of the season, setting a new Duquesne single-season record.
Duquesne couldn't get ahead early in the third, but it was able to tie it up at 40 and 43 points. Unfortunately, GW was able to extend its lead to as high as 12 in the quarter. After 30 minutes, the Dukes trailed by nine.
Duquesne came storming back early in the fourth. It cut its deficit down to one point in two and a half minutes before forcing a GW timeout. The Dukes finally tied it at 62-62 with 4:50 left in the game, then took the lead on the next possession.
With seconds ticking away, George Washington hit the game-clinching three-pointer to win it. The final score was 71-68.
