PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's tennis team edged out Saint Joseph's, 4-3, in its Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Dukes (6-5, 1-0) got out in front winning two-of-three in doubles and held on for the narrow win in singles competition.
Margot Pessy and
Daniela Latoni cruised to a 6-3 triumph in the top doubles position, then
Ellen Shanahan and
Ana Utrilla Benito secured the doubles point for the Red and Blue with a hard-fought, 7-5 win at the #3 spot.
Duquesne picked up three sweeps in singles play to clinch the victory. Latoni downed her opponent 6-3, 7-5 in the #2 spot. Shanahan battled out a tiebreak victory in the opening set and followed with a 6-4 win to earn the sweep at the #4 position.
Jasa Roka rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 sweep in the #5 spot for the match-deciding point.
Duquesne will host George Washington on Friday at 10:30 am before Saint Francis comes to town Saturday for Senior Day, all at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
