NEWPORTS NEWS, Va. – Duquesne sophomore guard
Megan McConnell has been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team Tuesday, as voted on by the league's coaches.
The sophomore point guard has not only been one of the best points guards in the conference this season, but she has been one of the top points guards in the nation.
"Megan is the engine and leader who has led us to 18 wins so far," said head coach
Dan Burt. "Her all-around excellence is evident on both sides of the ball where she is among the league leaders in numerous categories. Megan is as valuable to our program as any player in the league."
McConnell anchors the Dukes defensively, but she has taken her offense to another level this year. Her assists and points per game averages have both risen from last season as she ascended up the rankings nationally in 2022-23.
Although her passing and scoring were impressive, those weren't the best part of her game this year – it was her rebounding. As a 5'7" guard, she has ranked in the top-10 nationally all season in defensive rebounds. In the conference, her rebounds per game and total rebounds ranked in the top-three.
With Duquesne not pressing as much this year, her number of steals have taken a step back, but for her, that means still ranking in the top-four all year in the A-10 in steals and steals per game.
She fully established herself as one of the best all-around players in the country this season, as she is one of just two players in Division-I with multiple triple-doubles. She was the first player all year to record two of them.
In addition to the triple-doubles, she has also notched 12 double-doubles and has 16 games with 10 or more rebounds.
Listed below is where McConnell sits in the conference and country in different statistical categories:
- One of two players in Division-I with multiple triple-doubles this season
- Eighth nationally and first in the A-10 with 8.3 defensive rebounds per game
- Eighteenth nationally and second in the A-10 with 287 rebounds
- Twenty-fifth nationally and second in the A-10 with 9.9 rebounds per game
- Forty-second nationally and fourth in the A-10 with 66 steals
- Sixty-fourth nationally and fourth in A-10 with 2.28 steals per game
- Thirty-third nationally and third in the A-10 with 12 double-doubles
- Eighteenth nationally and second in the A-10 with a 2.43 assist-to-turnover ratio
- Sixteenth nationally and first in the A-10 with 158 assists
- Eighteenth nationally and 1st in the A-10 with 5.4 assists per game
- Second on the team with 11.0 points per game
McConnell was also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for her performance in the classroom. She has a 3.78 cumulative GPA and was named to the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.
Duquesne will look to keep its season alive on Wednesday when it takes on the
No. 15 seed Loyola Chicago at 2:30 P.M. ET.
