YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Duquesne University lacrosse team won its first game of the season on Friday, taking down the Youngstown State Penguins by a score of 16-13.
Duquesne and Youngstown State are both now 1-3 on the year.
Freshman
Chelsea Evans and sophomore
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw each scored four goals to lead the Dukes. Evans' total is a new career high. Rodriguez-Shaw leads the team with 13 goals and 15 points.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Leszczynski tallied a hat-trick plus an assist, and the remaining goals were scored by freshman
Julia Campagna (2), freshman
Chloe Holmes (2) and senior
Jillian Caroselli (1).
This game was low-scoring early on, as the first quarter ended 3-2 in favor of the Penguins. After one more goal by YSU to make it 4-2, Duquesne scored five-straight goals to take a 7-4 lead.
The Dukes scored three-straight out of the locker room in the second half to take a commanding 10-5 lead, but the Penguins had more fight left in them and were not making it easy on Duquesne.
Youngstown State was able to make it a one-goal game in the fourth quarter at 12-11, but Duquesne never gave up its lead. The Penguins got within one goal twice more, including at 14-13, but two late goals by Duquesne put the nail in the coffin and gave the Dukes a 16-13 win, their first of the year.
Duquesne is back on the field on Monday, Feb. 27 to take on Stetson on the road at noon ET.
