UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Duquesne University lacrosse team dropped its first road game of the season to No. 25 Penn State on Tuesday, losing 19-5.
Duquesne is now 0-3 on the year while Penn State is 3-0.
The Dukes battled early, but the 25
th-ranked team in the country was too much to handle on Tuesday. Penn State outscored Duquesne 10-2 in the second half.
Sophomore
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw recorded her second-straight hat-trick while sophomore
Mackenzie Leszczynski and freshman
Chloe Holmes each scored once.
Duquesne kept it pretty close early on, trailing by just two goals late in the first quarter thanks to goals by Rodriguez-Shaw and Leszczynski.
Unfortunately, Penn State's offense hit its stride in the second, scoring four goals in less than three minutes to take a 9-2 lead. Duquesne's defense held up for the rest of the half, but its offense was only able to score once more. At halftime, PSU led 9-3.
The Nittany Lions' offense came out swinging again in the second half, scoring the first eight goals of the second half before the Dukes finally stopped the bleeding. Rodriguez-Shaw was able to notch her second hat-trick of the year with 3:41 left in the game.
When it was all said and done, No. 25 Penn State ended up winning this one,
Duquesne is back on the field on Friday, Feb. 24 to take on Youngstown State on the road at 4:00 P.M. ET.
