PITTSBURGH - Duquesne (17-8, 7-5) turned up the defensive pressure, and survived a late last-second field goal attempt, to earn a regular season split with a 56-54 win over St. Bonaventure (13-13, 7-6) on Saturday afternoon before a venue-record crowd of 3,333 at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The win was the fourth in five games for the Dukes, who avenged a 65-56 defeat at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 18.
Jimmy Clark III and
Dae Dae Grant led Duquesne with 12 points and four steals each. Freshman
Kareem Rozier added a career-high 11 off the bench for the Dukes who forced 25 SBU turnovers.
The Dukes, who took 56-50 lead on a pair of Grant free throws with 30 seconds left, saw the Bonnies cut it to two on a Daryl Banks III free throw with :02 remaining. Banks III, who hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three with eight second left, intentionally missed the second free throw attempt and SBU's Anour Mellouk came up with the ball, but his made layup came after time had expired.
Duquesne posted a
Keith Dambrot Era high-tying 15 steals and its 35 points off turnovers were the most by a Dambrot-coached DU team.
Duquesne trailed by eight early before Rozier converted a three-point play off a steal and followed with a 3-pointer.
Tevin Brewer gave the Dukes their first lead at 15-13 on a 3-pointer, before the Bonnies put together a 14-2 run to take a 27-17 lead with four minutes left in the half.
A Rozier 3-pointer and
Joe Reece dunk helped pull the Dukes to within 31-27 at the half.
The Dukes held the Bonnies scoreless for the first four-plus minutes of the second half to take a 35-31 lead.
Duquesne took its largest lead at 51-43 on an
Austin Rotroff dunk, before the Bonnies mounted a 7-0 run to make it 52-50 with 1:51 left.
Grant then hit a scooping layup and added a pair of free throws to make it 56-50 and set up the frantic final 30 seconds.
Duquesne completes its three-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. vs. Saint Joseph's (ESPN+).
