PITTSBURGH -
Tevin Brewer scored 16 points and Duquesne (18-8, 8-5) held Saint Joseph's 12 points below its Atlantic 10 scoring average in completing a regular season sweep of the Hawks (13-13, 7-7) by a 76-62 score on Wednesday night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The victory was the fifth in six games for the Dukes, who never trailed in moving to 15-3 at home.
This is the first time since 1970-71 that Duquesne has opened the month of February with four-straight wins. The '71 team finished 21-4 (No. 15 AP)Â in advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Tre Williams added 13 points and
Dae Dae Grant finished with 10 for Duquesne which shot 50 percent. Jimmy Clark had eight points, six rebounds, three steals and a career-high nine assists for DU.
The loss was just the third in 10 games for Saint Joseph's, who went 7-2 after falling to Duquesne, 92-80 in Philadelphia on Jan 11.
The Hawks, who scored 13 points in the game's final five minutes, came into the game averaging 74 ppg. in Atlantic 10 play.
David Dixon came off the bench to convert a three-point play and dunk to start a 13-3 run that gave Duquesne a 19-7 lead.
Brewer hit back-to-back 3-pointers, DU's sixth and seventh, to make it 30-17.
Duquesne, which maintained a double-digit lead from that point on, took a 39-24 halftime lead when Clark III came up with a steal and fed
Quincy McGriff for a dunk at the horn.
The Dukes forced 11 SJU turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Saint Joseph's briefly cut it to 11 early in the second half, but R.J. Gunn Jr. answered with a 3-pointer to end the Hawks' threat.
DU took a 60-40 lead when McGriff, who scored eight off the bench, found
Joe Reece for a layup with just over 11 minutes left.
The Duquesne lead reached 23 three times, the last of which came at 72-49 with under five minutes left.
Duquesne hits the road for the first time since Feb. 4 when it takes on Saint Louis at Chaifetz Arena on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:00 p.m. ET (ESPN+).
NOTES
- Duquesne's 15 home wins are one shy of the school record set in 1950 (16-0) and matched in 1972 (16-1). The Dukes, who also went 15-3 in 1951, have two home games remaining.
- This is the first time since 1970-71 that Duquesne has opened the month of February with four-straight wins. The '71 team finished 21-4 in earned an NCAA Tournament bid. The last time DU won four in a row at any time in February was from Feb. 17-23, 1991.
- The Dukes outscored the Hawks 24-5 in bench points.
- This was the seventh wire-to-wire win for the Dukes (fourth in A-10 play with the others coming vs. VCU, at Saint Joe's and at GW).
- Jimmy Clark III's nine assists were four more than his previous career high. Clark III added three more steals to bring his Atlantic 10-leading total to 63.
- Tevin Brewer reached the 400 career assists mark on Jimmy Clark III 3-pointer at the 16:20 mark of the first half. Brewer, who had 324 assists in three seasons at FIU, is just the seventh player to wear a Duquesne uniform with 400+ assists. He is DU's first 400 assist player since Derrick Colter had 526 from 2013-16.
- Duquesne's largest lead was 23, the last of which came 72-49 with 4:40 left. Saint Joseph's never led.
