PREVIEW: Duquesne at Richmond

Dukes begin a stretch of three-straight on the road

Duquesne (12-4, 2-1), winner of five of its past six, begins a stretch of three-straight road games at Richmond (8-7, 1-1) on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 6:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

The Dukes, who moved to 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play with a 79-70 win over VCU on Wednesday, are 0-2 on the road with losses at then-No. 4 (AP) Kentucky and at A-10 preseason favorite Dayton.

Jimmy Clark III led DU with a career-high 26 points vs. VCU. He was joined in double figures by R.J. Gunn (a Duquesne career-high 13 points) and Dae Dae Grant (13 points). The Dukes never trailed in posting their first home win in the 10-game series vs. the Rams.

Richmond, which is 7-1 at home, is coming off a 73-63 win over George Washington at Robins Center. Tyler Burton, UR's preseason First Team All-A-10 forward, led the Spiders with 26 points.

Richmond is outscoring opponents 73.3-57.3 (+16.6 ppg.) at home. UR has outscored foes 102-76 from the foul line in their eight home games.

The Dukes are looking to post their first road win since Jan. 8, 2022 (78-74 at UMass; a span of 10 games).

  • This is the first of three-straight road games for DU, which follows the Richmond game with games at Saint Joseph's and St. Bonaventure. It is the longest road streak of the season for the Dukes.
  • The return of R.J. Gunn (missed 10g), Tevin Brewer (3g) and Kareem Rozier (1g) at Dayton marked the first time the Dukes had their complete roster available this season.
  • DU, which averaged 65.2 ppg. last year, is averaging 75.2 ppg. (+10.0 ppg.). The Dukes have topped the 90-point mark three times and are 11-1 when scoring 70 or more.

Grant, who went over the 1,400-point career mark vs. Winthrop, made his 100th career start vs. VCU.
  • Guard Jimmy Clark III, who scored 130 points in 33g as a freshman & sophomore at VCU, has scored 201 points in 16g at Duquesne. Clark III, who has scored in double digits in DU's past nine games - including a career-best 26 vs. VCU on Wednesday - entered the season having never scored more than nine points in a D-I game. Clark leads the A-10 with 35 steals.
  • Tevin Brewer has handed out a team-high 42 assists despite missing four games due to injuries. His 3.2 assist/turnover ratio is tied for the best in the A-10 and his .455 3-point pct ranks third in the conference.
  • Freshman Kareem Rozier has come off the bench to lead, or tie for the team lead, in assists four times. Rozier has 30 assists and nine turnovers this season (3.3-to-1 ratio).
  • Austin Rotroff has come off the bench to lead the Dukes in rebounding in seven times. The 6-10 forward ranked first nationally in offensive rebound percentage (per KenPom) through Jan. 4.
  • Grad student R.J. Gunn, who missed 10 games with a foot injury (returned on Dec. 28 at Dayton), is 6-of-11 from 3-point in his past two games. He is coming off a Duquesne career high 13-point game vs. VCU.

  • This is the 37th meeting in a series that dates to Jan. 12, 1937 ... DU led the series 8-0 when Richmond joined the Atlantic 10 in 2001-02 ... the Spiders promptly reeled off 14 consecutive wins before DU ended the streak with an 81-72 victory at Palumbo Center in 2012 ... UR then won eight more in a row before DU halted that streak with a 74-68 win in Richmond in 2019 (DU's first at UR since 1993) ... in A-10 regular season games, the Spiders hold a 23-2 lead ... the Dukes have won two of the past five meetings with Richmond.

  • Duquesne, which jumped out to a 35-13 lead, never trailed in snapping VCU's five-game win streak.
  • Jimmy Clark III, who played at VCU as a freshman and sophomore prior to transferring to Northwest Florida JC, scored a career-high 26 points against his former team. Clark III added a career-high five steals.
  • Dae Dae Grant and R.J. Gunn Jr. added 13 points each. Gunn's 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench were his Duquesne high.
  • Duquesne, led by four assists from Tevin Brewer, assisted on 15 of its 29 field goals.
  • The win was DU's first over VCU in Pittsburgh. The Rams had won the first four meetings in the Steel City (two at PPG Paints Arena and two at A.J. Palumbo Center). VCU won the first seven games of the series, Duquesne has now won two of the past three.
