HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore guard
Naelle Bernard opened up the scoring with a deep three-pointer, but Dayton ripped off six-straight points for the early advantage. That lead was short-lived though, as Myers tied things up with a three-pointer of her own.
At the first media timeout, Dayton led 10-6. Duquesne's only two makes at this point were the early three-pointers.
Dayton stayed sharp as the first quarter continued, taking a 18-8 lead with 3:02 left in the frame. A layup by Hamilton was followed by another Myers three-pointer, bringing the Dukes within five points.
The Flyers kept making their shots though, ending the first on a 12-2 run. They led 30-16 after 10 minutes.
The Dukes couldn't make up any ground early in the second quarter, but the back-half of the second quarter was the beginning of an offensive explosion and a special performance by Duquesne.
McConnell stole back-to-back passes to make up four points for Duquesne, then a nice finish by Wasylson brought the Dukes within 13.
A three-pointer by Wasylson and a layup by Hamilton put Duquesne on a 10-2 run to make it a 41-32 game. A three-point play by Johnson followed shortly thereafter, bringing the score to 42-35.
It didn't stop there – Johnson made another jumper, then Myers was found alone off a block by Wasylson. After those two points, Duquesne amazingly went into halftime down by just three points at 42-39. In the last 6:13 of the second quarter, Duquesne went on a 17-3 run.
A jumper from the free throw line by Johnson finally made it a one-point game, then a Myers three-pointer gave the Dukes the lead for the first time since it was 3-2.
McConnell continued to pest Dayton and notched her fourth steal of the game to go along with back-to-back buckets, including a three-point play, to make it 53-46.
Duquesne's three-point barrage kept on coming, as Wasylson and Myers hit back-to-back threes to make it 61-49 with 2:08 left in the third. The Dukes went into the final frame up by 12 points.
Myers hit her fifth three-pointer of the game to put Duquesne up by 13 points, but Dayton wasn't going away easily. They cut Duquesne's lead down to eight points with a little over five minutes remaining.
Hamilton hit a three-pointer off the glass to put Duquesne back up 11, a Johnson layup put the Dukes up 13 then a Wasylson three-pointer gave them a 78-63 lead with 3:12 left. Just like that, Duquesne put the game away – for the most part.
Chaos continued in the last few minutes, but not enough for Dayton to get back into the game. When time ran out, Duquesne was on top, winning 87-79 and completing the 19-point comeback.
