OLEAN, NY - Duquesne (13-6, 3-3) cut a 20-point second half deficit to six with under seven minutes to go, but was unable to close the gap in falling, 65-56, at St. Bonaventure (10-9, 4-2) on Wednesday night.
Jimmy Clark III led three Dukes in double figures with 12 points.
Tre Williams, in his first game back after missing two games due to injury, had 11 and R.J. Gunn Jr. posted a 10-10 double-double - his first double-double as a Duke.
DU, which trailed 53-33 with 12:03 left, mounted a 16-2 run to close to within 55-49 on a pair of
Dae Dae Grant free throws at the 6:48 mark, but couldn't overcome a .350 shooting night.
Duquesne missed 12 of its first 13 shots - and went scoreless for 6:11 - in falling behind 20-3.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from
Quincy McGriff and Williams briefly cut it to 24-11, before the Bonnies took a 34-14 lead at the 5:07 mark.
A pair of
Halil Barre dunks helped the Dukes to pull within 38-23 at the half.
The Bonnies outshot the Dukes 62.5 percent to 29.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
The Dukes missed their first five shots out of the half and were unable to gain ground on the Bonnies who opened the half 2-of-7.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Yann Farrell enabled SBU to match its largest lead at 53-33.
Duquesne held St. Bonaventure scoreless for over four minutes and pulled to within 10 at 53-43 on a
Kareem Rozier 3-pointer and free throw. Williams, who scored eight in the second half, had four to help the Dukes get back in it.
Grant completed the 16-2 run with his free throws.
The Dukes held the Bonnies to .269 shooting in the second half in mounting their comeback.
DU's final field goal percentage was its third-lowest of the season.
Duquesne opens a two-game homestand against Fordham (14-4, 2-3) on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 2:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
