PREVIEW: Volleyball Ready for Chattanooga Classic

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne volleyball team heads south this weekend for the Chattanooga Classic hosted by UT Chattanooga.

The Dukes will play Chattanooga Friday at 10:00 A.M. ET before taking on Miami (OH) later that day at 5 P.M. Duquesne will close out its weekend Saturday at 2 P.M. against Southern Indiana.   

The match against Chattanooga will be available to stream and live stats will be available for all three matches. The matches against Miami (OH) and Southern Indiana will not be available to stream.

THE DUKES
  • Duquesne is 1-6 after going 1-2 this past weekend at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational and dropping a game in five sets to Saint Francis (PA) Tuesday night.
  • The Dukes beat Canisius 3-1 in the first match of this past weekend, and fell to William & Mary later that night. They lost to Robert Morris in five sets in the third game.
  • Freshman Carsyn Henschen was named to the Duquesne/RMU Invitational All-Tournament Team after totaling 41 kills and seven service aces in the three matches.
  • Senior Morgan Kelly made her season debut against Canisius, recording 20 kills in her first match of the year. She recorded 42 kills on the weekend.
  • Senior Anita Parrott was named to the Penn State Invitational All-Tournament Team after the first weekend of the season. She recorded 15 kills and 1.1 blocks per set in the three matches.
  • Henschen ranks second in the A-10 in kills and is tied for sixth in kills per set. She is also tied for fifth with eight service aces.
  • Kelly ranks fourth in the A-10 with 3.41 kills per set. The senior returns after earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team in 2021 after putting up 3.48 kills per set which was the second-best in the conference.
  • Freshman Ariel Helm leads the team and ranks sixth in the conference with 21. She is also fourth on the team with 33 kills.
  • The Dukes are coming off of a 13-16 (7-9 A-10) season that ended in the A-10 Championship semifinals against the eventual-champion Dayton in a five-set thriller.
  • Three of the Dukes' top four point-getters return for the 2022 season.
  • Sophomore Anna Shoemake was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team last season after ranking fourth on the team with 254 points and third with 206 kills. She ranks third on the team with 40 kills.
  • Also returning are seniors Hailey Poling and Anita Parrott. Poling led the conference with 1,114 assists and 9.86 assists per set last year while Parrott blocked the fifth-most shots in the conference in 2021 (108).
  • Duquesne was picked to finish sixth in the A-10 by the league's coach in the 2022 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll.
DUQUESNE HEAD COACH STEVE OPPERMAN (Ohio State '87)
  • Steve Opperman enters his 25th season as the head coach of the Dukes in 2021.
  • He owns a career-record of 463-472 and a mark of 344-356 at Duquesne.
  • Opperman collected his 450th-career victory with a 3-0 win over Youngstown State in the 2021 season opener.
  • The New Bremen, Ohio native is Duquesne's all-time winningest coach with 344 career victories on The Bluff.
  • He is a four-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (co-2001, co-2004, co-2010 and 2013).
  • Opperman coached the first two AVCA All-Americans in program history, Liz Homan (2010) and Arielle Love (2014).
  • The Ohio State alum has coached 16 First or Second Team A-10 All-Conference players (a total of 24 times).
  • He has coached 23 A-10 All-Rookie Team members.
  • Opperman arrived in Pittsburgh in 1998 after spending seven seasons as the head coach at Wright State, where he amassed a record of 119-116 from 1991-97.
SCOUTING UT CHATTANOOGA (ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS)
  • Chattanooga has started 2-5 but has won two of its past three games, with those wins coming over UNC Ashville and Presbyterian.
  • Natalie Tyson leads the team with 85 kills and 94 points.
  • Kate Neill has 11 blocks to lead the Mocs.
  • Sophia Bossong and Elaine Redman have split setting duties so far, with Bossong recording 143 so far while Redman has picked up 102.
  • The Mocs brought in five transfers this season to try and reload after an 11-19 season in 2021.
  • Chattanooga was picked to finish ninth in the Southern Conference this season.
  • Julie Torbett was hired on Jan. 4, 2022 to lead the volleyball program and is in her first season. She most recently coached at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 28 seasons as a head coach, Torbett Thomas holds a 470-409 record.
SCOUTING MIAMI (OH) (ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS)
  • The RedHawks are 2-4 this season and hosted the 2022 Miami/Best Western Invitational this past weekend, going 1-2 in three matches.
  • Ellie Hanson (63) and Allyson Severance (62) lead the team in kills through six matches.
  • Hayden Hicks has recorded 161 assists to lead the RedHawks.
  • Miami (OH) has been out-blocked by its opponents 52-23.
  • The RedHawks were picked to finish fifth in the MAC East Division by the league's coaches.
  • They return 12 players and brought in five newcomers.
  • Carolyn Condit, Miami's legendary coach, returns for her 39th season leading the volleyball program. She holds a 672-513 record.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN INDIANA (ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATS)
  • Its been a tough start for the Screaming Eagles as they currently have an 0-6 record.
  • Abby Weber (62) and Leah Anderson (60) lead the team in kills. Anderson was selected to the Preseason All-OVC Team.
  • Katherine Koch has 160 assists, 139 more than anyone else on the roster.
  • Despite the winless record, Southern Indiana has matched its opponents block total with 40.
  • USI is in its first season as a Division-I program as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
  • The Screaming Eagles were picked to finish eighth in the conference.
  • Randi Raff is in her fourth season as the USI head coach.
