The Dukes Fall to GW in a Five Set Thriller

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne University volleyball team fell to George Washington in a heartbreaking five sets Friday night at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Duquesne falls to 3-12 (0-3 A-10) while GW moves to 7-9 (1-2 A-10).

Although the Dukes lost, it was not due to a lack of effort, as five Duquesne players recorded 10 or more kills.

Senior Morgan Kelly had 17, graduate student Elizabeth Osborn notched 15, freshman Carsyn Henschen recorded 13, senior Anita Parrott set a new season high with 11 and sophomore Madison Floyd tied a career high with 10.

Senior Hailey Poling matched a career high and set a new season high with 58 kills. She also pitched in with nine digs.

Floyd and Henschen each had four blocks to lead the team while freshman Madison Grimm set a new career high with 28 digs.

Senior Ashley Larson set a new season high with 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dukes dominated the first set, winning 25-14. They went on an 8-0 run in the middle of the set to put themselves up 17-8. They ended on a 6-1 run to down the Colonials.

The crowd saw some extra volleyball in the second set, but the Dukes unfortunately fell, 27-25. GW showed a lot of heart in this one. Duquesne looked like it was going to win in dominant fashion again, but GW came back from down 19-14 to swing the momentum.

The third set was close most of the way through, with neither team getting a larger lead than four. It was tight late at 20-19, but GW held that one-point lead and won the set, 25-21.

The fourth set looked a lot like the first, with the Dukes dominating from beginning to end. They went on a 6-1 run right in the middle of the set to give themselves a 16-8 lead. They cruised the rest of the set to win, 25-18.

In the final set, GW took control. Duquesne had the lead early at 4-3, but the Colonials would go on a 12-1 run to finish the match.
