Duquesne Takes Down Richmond to Stay Undefeated in Conference Play

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Duquesne women's soccer team won its match against Richmond 1-0 Thursday evening on the road.

The win improves Duquesne's record to 4-3-1 (2-0-1 A-10) while Richmond falls to 1-6-2 (0-2-1 A-10).

Freshman midfielder Mackenzie Muir scored a stunning goal in the 45th-minute and that was all Duquesne needed to stay undefeated in conference play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer recorded her first career shutout in the match. She made six saves in the victory.

Senior midfielder Sarah Wilkinson tallied the assist on Muir's goal. She now has three points on the season.

Junior forward Jaimi Araujo notched a team-high three shots and two shots on goal for the Dukes. She was a menace to the Spiders' back line and wreaked havoc all game.

Senior defender Ashley Rodiguez won't show up on the scoresheet, but the lockdown left back played all 90 minutes and shut down Richmond attackers the entire night.

Not even two minutes into the game, Araujo fired a shot on goal and Duquesne had a chance to put in the rebound, but the Richmond goalkeeper was able to keep it out.

With maybe its best chance of the game, Richmond put a shot off the crossbar about 10 minutes into the first half. It put another on net in the 17th-minute, but the game remained scoreless.

Araujo ripped another shot from outside the box in the 19th-minute, but it flew just wide. Luckily for her and the Dukes, Muir was reinserted into the starting lineup tonight and made it count.

Twenty-nine seconds into the second half, Muir let it fly from way outside the box and found the back of the net for the Dukes. It was a spectacular shot, and not everybody knew if it even went in at first. Regardless, the referees' opinions are the ones that matter, and they announced it as a goal.

The game would remain scoreless for the remainder of the half and the Dukes took their lead into the locker room.

The second half got chippy and physical, but neither team would end up scoring. Duquesne took to a more defensive strategy, but it was still able to possess the ball enough to get a couple of good scoring opportunities.

The Dukes' back line held up strong all night and kept the Spiders off the scoreboard. The defense would carry the team to the win.
