PITTSBURGH -
Tom Tzabari's goal in the 58th minutes was the difference as Duquesne (6-0-1, 1-0) handed Loyola Chicago (4-1-2, 0-1) its first defeat in the Atlantic 10 opener for both schools played Saturday night on Rooney Field.
Christoffer Vie Angell scored in the third minute for the Dukes who have now tied the school record for most games without a loss to open a season (seven), while extending their home unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1, 3-0 this year).
The loss was the first for the Ramblers, who were competing in their first-ever A-10 event.
Nate Dragisich registered his fifth-straight game with an assist when he found Vie Angell on a corner to open the scoring.
Tate Mohney assisted on the game-winner, which Tzabari struck from beyond 30 yards.
Domenic Nascimben recorded seven saves for the Dukes who were outshot 21-15.
Duquesne, who has been among those also receiving votes in the past two United Soccer Coaches Top 25 polls, returns to action next Saturday when it heads to Amherst to face Massachusetts at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dukes got on the board early when Christoffer Vie Angell deposited a corner from Nate Dragisich in the third minute.
- It was the fifth-consecutive game with an assist for Dragisich.
- Loyola tied it on a goal by Andrew Schweinert in the ninth minute.
- Domenic Nascimben made a fine diving save on Marc Torrellas shot in the 16th minute.
- Maxi Hopfer, who finished the evening with a game-high nine shots, placed a hard shot left of the cage in the 26th minute.
- Loyola outshot Duquesne 11-5 in the first half. The Dukes had seven corners to four for the Ramblers in the opening 45..
- Hopfer sent another hard shot wide of the net in the early moments of the second half.
- Nascimben made back-to-back saves on point blank shots by Billy Hency in the 52nd minute.
- Torge Witteborg headed a DU corner kick off the left post in the 55th minute.
- Tom Tzabari rifled a deep shot to the upper right 90 from 30 yards out to make it 2-1 in the 58th minute.
- Hopfer gained control and made a run at the net in the 81st minute, but his low shot slid wide.
