Dukes Unable to Score Against Drexel, Fall 2-0

PITTSBURGH -- The Duquesne University women's soccer team fell to the Drexel Dragons Thursday afternoon by a final score of 2-0.

This marks the Dukes' first home loss of the season and moves their record to 2-2. With the win, Drexel's record improves to 4-0-1.

The luck wasn't in Duquesne's favor today as the Dukes hit two crossbars on a couple of prime scoring opportunities. Drexel was able to take advantage of two of the few Duquesne mistakes in the second half to take this one.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Neundorfer made a few big saves today, racking up seven in total. Junior forward Jaimi Araujo led the game in shots with six and shots on goal with four.

There was not much going on in the first half for either squad. The match was scoreless after 45 minutes, but the Dukes looked to be in good shape.

Unfortunately, Drexel was able to find the back of the net just five minutes into the second half. A corner by Delaney Lappin found the head of Kelly Jones in the box. In the chaos, Annalena O'Reilly was there to finish it and put the Dragons up by one.

Shortly after the first goal, Lappin scored from way outside the box. Neundorfer got a piece of it, but her deflection was not enough to keep it out of the goal.

Duquesne did not take its foot off the gas despite the two-goal deficit. Araujo fired a free kick off the crossbar, the second crossbar on the day for the Dukes, and other players had a handful of other opportunities.

Eventually, the clock hit 90 minutes and Drexel prevailed, but not due to the lack of effort from the Dukes, who outshot the Dragons on the day.

Duquesne is back in action Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET when it hosts Buffalo.

GAME NOTES
  • Neundorfer saved seven shots today, which is the second-most in her career.
  • Araujo's free kick in the 76th-minute bounced straight off the crossbar. It was one of her season-high six shots today. She also registered four shots on goal.
  • Senior defender Kayla Winicki made her first start of the season, and her first start since injuring her knee in the second game of 2021.
  • The Dukes outshot the Dragons 12-11, but Drexel registered nine shots on goal compared to just seven by Duquesne.
  • There were lots of substitutions on both sides today. A total of 45 players saw action between the two teams.
