ANN ARBOR, MICH. -
Torge Witteborg's goal in the 37th minute held as Duquesne posted its first win over a Power 5 team since 2003, defeating Michigan 1-0 at U-M Soccer Complex in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The game was the season-opener for both schools.
Witteborg's goal - his first as a Duke - came off a pass from
Cameron Territo. The game-deciding play was initiated when
Jacob Casha drew a foul in the U-M end.
Nate Dragisich took the ensuing free kick and placed the ball just left of the goal to Territo, who headed to the front of the net where Witteborg - in traffic - put it away with his left foot.
The win was DU's first over a Power 5 team since a 1-0 victory at Ohio State on Sept. 3, 2003.
Domenic Nascimben, playing behind a stout defense, turned away six shots in posting the shutout.
The Dukes, who were outshot 21-8, had one more shot on goal than the Wolverines (7-6).
It was a true team effort as 17 field players saw action for the Dukes.
