Men's Basketball Announces the Addition of Eight Newcomers

PITTSBURGH – Duquesne University head men's basketball coach Keith Dambrot has announced the addition of eight newcomers to the 2022-23 roster.

Guards Tevin Brewer (Fort Smith, Ark./FIU), Devin Carney (Butler, Pa./Butler HS), Jimmy "Tre" Clark III (Covington, Ga./Northwest Florida State College), Quincy McGriff (Los Angeles, Calif./Salt Lake Community College) and Kareem Rozier (Detroit, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) and frontcourt men Halil Barre (Cotonou, Benin/Scotland (Pa.) Campus), David Dixon (Memphis, Tenn./Speights (Fla.) Academy) and Matus Hronsky (Poruba, Slovakia/Wasatch (Utah) Academy) comprise the group of incoming Dukes.

The newcomers consist of a pair of guards - Clark and McGriff - who met in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship game, a guard who was a Conference USA Third Team pick last season (Brewer) and a pair of high school standouts in Carney and Rozier.

Barre, Dixon and Hronsky are all products of highly-successful postgraduate school programs.

"Our plan was to improve our shooting, our assist-to-turnover ratio and our defensive toughness and with this class we feel we've accomplished many of those goals," said Dambrot. "We have pretty much rebuilt our backcourt and added some important pieces to the frontcourt."

Barre, a 6-9, 220-pound freshman who is currently competing for the Benin National Team, averaged 18 points and nine rebounds last season at Scotland Campus (Pa.). He used his 7-foot-4 wingspan to block three shots per game

"Halil had a lot of high-major interest and we were fortunate to recruit him early," said Dambrot. "He is very good defensively around the rim and has shown the ability to shoot the ball out to 15 feet. We feel he can be a good scorer around the basket as well."

Brewer, a 5-8 grad transfer, started all 66 games in which he played in three seasons at FIU. He led the Panthers in scoring (15.2 ppg.), 3-pointers made (66-of-166, .398) and assists (169, 5.6 apg.) in a team-high 32.1 minutes per game in 2022. His 5.6 assists per game led Conference USA and ranked 15th nationally last season. His 2.01 assist-to-turnover ratio also led the conference. He played two years of junior college ball prior to enrolling at FIU.

"Tevin was a must for us," said Dambrot. "He has shown outstanding scoring ability, not only at FIU, but also in junior college. He plays with a chip on his shoulder because of his size, but he can bench press 265 pounds. In addition to his scoring, he has consistently posted good assist and efficiency numbers. We are looking for him to step in a provide leadership to our team."

The 6-1 Carney was a prolific scorer for nearby Butler Area High School where he joined former teammate Ethan Morton (Butler HS/Purdue) and current Notre Dame player Robby Carmody (Mars HS) as the only male players from Butler County to reach the 2,000-point plateau. He averaged 26.0 points per game and shot 55 percent from the field and 90 percent from the foul line as a senior.

"Devin is an unbelievable scorer in addition to being one of the best shooters that we've seen," said Dambrot. "He has good ballhandling skills and is an outstanding athlete. He has the potential to be a very good player for us."

Clark, who played in 33 games at VCU in 2019-20 and 2020-21, helped lead 31-5 Northwest Florida to the NJCAA National Championship this season. The 6-3 Georgia native led the Raiders in scoring (12.3 ppg.) and steals (74, 2.1/g.) and was second on the team in assists (118, 3.4/g.) and blocks (21). He, along with future teammate Quincy McGriff (Salt Lake CC), were both named to the NJCAA All-Tournament Team. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Tre has shown that he can play at a high level in the Atlantic 10," said Dambrot. "He's won a National Championship in junior college where he continued to improve. He's a defensive-minded guard with a diversified game. He should help our toughness level immensely."

Dixon was named second team Florida Sun Basketball Conference (FSBC) post-grad all-state in helping Speights Academy to a Gulf Division Championship last season. The 6-9 freshman forward averaged 15 points,12 rebounds and three blocks per game in 2021-22.

"David is a skilled big man who had numerous high-major offers out of high school before an ACL injury caused a lot of schools to back off," said Dambrot. "He had a great year at Speights Academy, where he was coached by a former NBA player (Marreese Speights). He's pretty advanced in his development and we expect him to be a versatile big guy for us."

Hronsky, a 6-8 freshman forward, is a native of Poruba, Slovakia who played last season at Wasatch (Utah) Academy. A prolific shooter, he has represented his home country in numerous international events.

"Matus is a big-time shooter with National Team experience," said Dambrot. "But he's more than just a shooter. He's a skilled overall player. He can handle the ball and pass it. He can play multiple spots and should really help us become a better shooting team."

The 6-6 McGriff earned Second Team NJCAA All-American honors in helping the Salt Lake Community College to Scenic West Athletic Conference and Region 18 titles on the way to advancing to the NJCAA championship game. The Los Angeles native, who was second on SLCC with a 13.5 ppg. scoring average, shot .430 from the field, .371 (86-of-232) from 3-point and .812 from the foul line last season. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Quincy is another winner, who brings plenty of versatility to the roster," said Dambrot. "He can play either guard spot as well as the wing. He has shown that he can win at a high level at Salt Lake. He will also provide a needed boost to our outside shooting."

Rozier, a freshman, was a four-year starter who averaged 16.9 points, 8.2 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game in leading Orchard Lake St. Mary's to a 20-5 record, Catholic League championship, regional title and state quarterfinal appearance as a senior. A First Team Associated Press first team all-state pick, the 5-8 Detroit native was one of five finalists for the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award.

"Kareem has shown great leadership ability and has done nothing but win throughout his high school career," said Dambrot. "He's another player who plays with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. He has competed and excelled in a great high school league and also played for an outstanding AAU program in Meanstreets."
