Dukes Fall in Epic Battle in D.C.

Freshman guards Jackie Johnson III and Primo Spears post career highs in triple overtime defeat

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Jackie Johnson III scored a career-high 30 points and fellow freshman Primo Spears added a career-best 25, but it wasn't enough as Duquesne (6-22, 1-15) fell to George Washington (12-16, 8-8), 98-93, in triple overtime on Wednesday night at Smith Center in Washington, D.C.

James Bishop scored 19 of his 23 points in the three overtime periods to carry GW. Joe Bamisile added 30 for the Colonials who handed the Dukes their 15th consecutive defeat.

Spears, who had two points at the half, had 12 in the three overtimes, while Johnson III scored 11 in the extra periods.

Tyson Acuff scored 15 points and Kevin Easley Jr. had 11 rebounds and posted career highs in steals (6) and blocks (4) for DU, which played in just the fifth triple-overtime game in the school's 106-year history.

Bamisile tied it at 59-59 on a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation and Spears was unable to get off a shot on DU's next possession forcing overtime.

Bishop gave GW a 71-68 lead on a 3-pointer with 12 second left in the first overtime, only to see DU's Davis Larson bury a matching three from the right corner with five seconds to go to force the second OT.

Larson had eight points and nine rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench.

Duquesne held a 79-75 lead with just over two minutes left in the second overtime before, GW rallied to tie it on a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining.

Spears had a chance to win it for the Dukes, but misfired on a 3-point attempt from the top of the key with two seconds left.

Bamisile scored seven in the third overtime to help GW pull away.

There were 13 ties and 12 lead changes in the game that saw neither team manage a lead of more than seven.

Duquesne, which finished 7-of-32 from the 3-point arc, went 2-8 in the three overtime periods.

GW, which went 8-of-16 from deep, did not miss a 3-point attempt following the end of regulation, going 4-of-4, including 3-of-3 by Bishop.

Duquesne returns to Pittsburgh to host La Salle in the final home game of the season on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 2:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

A trio of senior student managers as well as final-year player Noah Buono will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
