PITTSBURGH - Jimmy Clark III's buzzer-beating 3-pointer was the difference as Duquesne (7-1) battled back from a 14-point first-half deficit to extend its win streak to six with a 78-77 win over Ball State (4-4) on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
Ball State took a took a two-point lead on a three-point play by Jaylin Sellers with 12 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession,
Tevin Brewer got the ball to a closely guarded Clark on the left wing. Clark, stagger-stepped back and launched the game-winner just over the outstretched arms of Jarrion Coleman.
Clark's make was the eleventh lead change of the game.
Clark led Duquesne with a career-high 16 points and four assists. Brewer added 14 points and
Dae Dae Grant finished with 11 for the Dukes, who went 11-of-22 from the 3-point arc. Clark and Brewer had four 3-pointers each.
Ball State shot 54.2 percent from the field in defeat.
Duquesne opened the game 1-of-8 with five turnovers in falling behind 18-4, before battling back to make it 29-24 on a Brewer 3-pointer.
Ball State responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to make it an 11-point game as Duquesne was forced to burn a timeout.
Matus Hronsky scored six in the final 2:02 and Clark III drilled a 3-pointer at the horn to help the Dukes cut it to 40-36 at the half.
Ball State went 6-of-12 and Duquesne 7-of-11 from 3-point in the opening 20 minutes.
Duquesne took its first lead, at 53-51, on a Grant 3-pointer with 12:50 left and upped it to 55-51 on a
Kareem Rozier drive as the Dukes hit eight of their first 11 shots of the second half.
From that point on, there were four ties and nine lead changes - with neither team leading by more than four - prior to Clark's game-winner.
Next up for the Dukes is the Thundering Herd of Marshall, who pay a visit to UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
NOTES
- With the win, the Dukes took just eight games to surpass their win total from a year ago (6-24).
- This was the 18th time Duquesne has come back from a double-digit deficit to win under Keith Dambrot. DU's largest deficit was 14, at 18-4, with 12:02 left in the first half.
- DU's six-game win streak is its longest since 2019-20 when the Dukes opened with 10-straight victories on their way to a 15-2 start.
- Clark III, who was coming off his first scoreless game of the season, finished with a career-high 16 points. His previous high was 13 vs. South Carolina State on Nov. 14. Clark III had never made more than one 3-pointer in a game until today (4-of-8). He was 4-of-19 from deep this season entering the game.
- Duquesne is now 63-4 when leading with 5:00 left under Keith Dambrot.
- First-year Miami, Ohio transfer Dae Dae Grant (11 points) had his streak of consecutive 20-point games snapped at four. It was the longest 20-point streak by a Duke since Micah Mason scored 20 or more six-straight times in January/February of 2016.
- Duquesne is now 22-5 in non-conference home games since 2018-19.
