Tess Myers Sets New Career Highs as Duquesne Beats Cornell by 27

Myers and Megan McConnell each record double-doubles in the win

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne women's basketball team, led by sophomore guard Tess Myers' career game, shot the lights out in an 87-60 win over Cornell on Monday afternoon at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

With the win, Duquesne improves to 9-3 while Cornell falls to 6-5.

Myers tied her career high with 23 points, set a new career high with seven three-pointers made and set a new career high with 10 rebounds. Today was the first double-double of her career.

As a team, everything was falling for the Dukes. They shot 59.6 percent (31-for-52) from the field and 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from three-point range.

Duquesne outscored Cornell in every quarter on its way to a 27-point win – the second-largest winning margin this season. The Dukes dominated on the glass, outrebounding Cornell 41-19 overall.

The Dukes also ended the game with five players with 10 or more points scored – the second time they have done that this year. Every player that made a shot made at least three of them.

The four other players in double digits for Duquesne were sophomore guard Naelle Bernard (14), sophomore guard Megan McConnell (12), junior guard Amaya Hamilton (11) and junior center Precious Johnson (10).

McConnell's 11 assists are a new career high, and today marked her sixth double-double of the season and eighth of her career.

The Dukes jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after two makes and a quick five points by Bernard.

Four points by Hamilton gave Duquesne an 11-7 lead at the first quarter media timeout as the Dukes began the game shooting well from the field. They made five of their first seven shots.

The two teams traded buckets for the next few possessions as the scoring continued both ways. Cornell made two three-pointers while junior forward Ayanna Townsend and McConnell each made a mid-range jumper.

Myers' first three-pointer of the game gave Duquesne a seven-point lead, and by the end of the first quarter the Dukes were up 23-15 while shooting 66.7 percent.

Redshirt junior guard Lauren Wasylson kept the hot shooting going and started off the second quarter with a three and a deep two-pointer, putting Duquesne up by 11 points.

The three-pointers kept on coming for Duquesne as Myers hit two more, putting the Dukes up by 14.

A driving layup by McConnell and a good-looking hook shot by Hamilton put Duquesne up by 13 with a few minutes remaining in the first half. Three free throws and two more McConnell layups gave the Dukes a 48-28 lead at the break.

Myers picked up right where she left off in the first half, hitting her fourth and fifth three-pointer of the game right out of the gate. Her sixth of the game followed shortly after on a cross-court pass from Wasylson.

Wasylson hit her own three-pointer with 4:16 left in the third quarter, putting Duquesne up 63-37. For the rest of the third quarter, the Dukes kept their lead at about 20 points, putting them in complete control going into the final 10 minutes.

With the big lead, Duquesne got somewhat sloppy with the ball early in the fourth quarter. Even with the mistakes, Cornell was never able to get back into the game.

Myers set a new career high with her seventh three-pointer with 6:04 left in the game. By the time the clock expired, Duquesne won the game by 27 points.
