PITTSBURGH - Duquesne (9-3) rallied from a 16-point first half deficit to hand Indiana State (9-3) just its third loss 12 games, 92-86, on Saturday afternoon at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
Tre Williams, a second-year transfer from ISU, led a balanced Duquesne attack with 19 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks against his former team.
Jimmy Clark III scored 17 points,
Joe Reece had 16 and
Dae Dae Grant added 15 points for the Dukes.
Freshman
Kareem Rozier had a career-high 10 points off the bench for Duquesne, which shot 62 percent in the second half in completing its 19th double-digit comeback under head coach
Keith Dambrot.
Indiana State hit four 3-pointers in jumping out to an 20-4 lead as the Dukes opened the game 2-of-10 with five turnovers.
A steal and score by Matus Hronsky cut the 16-point deficit in half with under 10 minutes left.
DU pulled to within four on a Williams basket that made it 28-24.
A layup by Reece cut it to two, forcing an ISU timeout with 3:43 left in the half.
The Dukes, who took their first lead on a Grant three-point play that made it 35-34, led 37-36 at the half.
There was one tie and five lead changes early in the second half, before ISU got back-to-back 3-pointers from Zach Hobbs to open a six-point lead.
The Sycamores extended the lead to eight, before DU made it 67-64 on back-to-back buckets from
Halil Barre and Williams.
DU trailed 73-67, before Williams started a 14-2 run with a three-point play.
Reece made it a one-point game on a pair of free throws and Grant buried his second 3-pointer of the half to give the Dukes a 75-73 lead with 4:58 to go.
Clark III had a steal-and-score and a fast break layup to complete the run that upped the lead to 81-75.
Clark III added a 3-pointer that made it 86-79 with 1:55 left.
ISU would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
Duquesne shot 52 percent for the game, while Indiana State shot 50 percent. Both teams finished with nine 3-pointers.
Duquesne completes a stretch of nine-straight home games when it hosts Winthrop in its non-conference finale on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
The Winthrop game will be preceded by the Duquesne women vs. Howard at 11:00 a.m.
NOTES
- This was the 19th time Duquesne has come back from a double-digit deficit to win under Keith Dambrot. DU's largest deficit was 16, at 20-4, with 12:19 left in the first half.
- This was the first time since a 78-70 win over Bradley on Nov. 22, 2021 that the Dukes had five double-digit scorers.
- It was the third time this season that the Dukes topped the 90-point mark.
- Tre Williams, who played two years at Indiana State prior to transferring to Duquesne, led the Dukes in points (19), rebounds (8), blocks (2) and tied for the team lead with three assists. Three of Williams' former teammates, Julian Larry, Kailex Stephens and Cooper Neese, are on the current Sycamores roster.
- Jimmy Clark III's 17 points were two shy of his season high. Clark III scored 11 in the second half.
- This was the third-straight double-digit game for Joe Reece who finished with 16.
- Kareem Rozier came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points in 17 minutes.
