PITTSBURGH - Duquesne (10-3) jumped out to a 20-0 lead and never looked back in concluding non-conference play with a 74-57 win over Winthrop (5-8) on Wednesday afternoon at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
The threesome of
Dae Dae Grant (21 points),
Jimmy Clark III (15 points) and
Quincy McGriff (15 points) led Duquesne, which hit eight 3-pointers in building a 43-21 halftime lead.
Grant, who topped the 1,400-career point mark in the second half, went 6-of-14 from 3-point, while McGriff went 5-of-11 from deep in setting a new career scoring high.
Grant's eight assists tied his career best.
The win was the third in a row and tenth-straight over a Big South Conference opponent for the Dukes who were concluding a nine-game homestand.
The loss extended Winthrop's non-conference road losing streak to eight.
Duquesne held Winthrop scoreless for 7:23 in jumping out to a 20-0 lead. McGriff hit a pair of 3-pointers and Grant added a third as six Dukes scored in the first seven minutes.
Consecutive 3-pointers by McGriff, Clark III and Grant forced a second Winthrop timeout with the score 29-2. The score remained 29-2 before Winthrop converted its first field goal after 12-straight misses at the 10:36 mark.
The Eagles mounted a 9-2 run to cut it to 34-18, before the Dukes answered with a
Halil Barre basket.
A Clark III follow dunk, Barre block and Grant 3-pointer turned the momentum and gave Duquesne a 41-18 lead.
Winthrop, which shot .438 in the second half, pulled to within 13 at 59-46 on a Kelton Talford three-point play with 9:35 left.
A Grant 3-pointer, his sixth of the game, put him over the 1,400-point mark and gave the Dukes a 62-49 lead 30 seconds later.
Duquesne, which assisted on 18 of its 27 field goals, outscored Winthrop 23-7 off turnovers and 15-2 in fast break points.
DU finished 12-of-32 from the arc, while Winthrop went 5-of-23 from deep.
Duquesne will break for Christmas before opening Atlantic 10 play at conference preseason favorite Dayton on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
NOTES
- This marks just the fourth time in program history - and second time under Keith Dambrot - that the Dukes will enter Atlantic 10 play with 10 wins. The others: 2007-08 (10-3), 2015-16 (10-3) and 2019-20 (10-2).
- Dae Dae Grant, who was playing his 100th game, went over the 1,400 career point mark on his sixth 3-pointer with 8:59 left. Grant tied his career high with 8 assists (done three times at Miami, Ohio).
- First-year JC transfer Quincy McGriff's 15 points topped his previous career high of 11 set vs. Alabama State. His five 3-point makes were two more than his previous career best.
- Jimmy Clark III finished with 15 points, three assists and three steals. It was his sixth consecutive double-digit scoring game.
- Duquesne's largest lead was 27, at 29-2, with 10:37 left in the first half ... Winthrop never led ... Duquesne led for 39:12.
