PREVIEW: Duquesne vs New Mexico State

Dukes and Aggies clash on Sunday afternoon at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse

Duquesne (7-2), which saw its six-game win streak snapped in an 82-71 loss to Marshall on Thursday, looks to get back on the winning track when New Mexico State (4-3) visits UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

This will be the second meeting between the Dukes and Aggies, with the previous game coming in December of 1972.

This is the sixth of nine consecutive home games for Duquesne, which cut a 21-point second half deficit to four with five minutes left vs. Marshall. Jimmy Clark III led DU with a career-high 19 points - including 16 in the second half - vs. the Thundering Herd. Dae Dae Grant added 18 for the Dukes.

NMSU, which is coming off a 66-65 loss at Santa Clara on Wednesday, is 0-2 on the road with the other loss coming by three (64-67) at UTEP on Nov. 12.

Duquesne is 22-6 in non-conference home games - including wins at four different "home" venues - since 2018-19.

Duquesne is 5-1 all-time (3-0 at home) vs. schools that comprise the current Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

  • This is the sixth of nine-straight home games for the Dukes, who won't leave UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse until their Dec. 28 Atlantic 10 opener at Dayton.
  • DU, which averaged 65.2 ppg. last year, is averaging 78.1 ppg. through nine games. The Dukes have scored 566 points in their first seven home games - an average of 80.9 ppg.
  • DU ranks 19th nationally in 3-point percentage (.397) thru Thursday. The mark is the Dukes' best under Keith Dambrot (current is .350 in 2017-18) and on school record pace (.375 in 1989-90).
  •  DU's assists per game average is up +5.9/g. from last year (from 10.0 to 15.9).
  • Guard Dae Dae Grant is shooting .508 from 3-point (33-of-65). Grant, who has three games with five or more 3-pointers, ranked 12th nationally in 3-point percentage (.508), T7th in 3-pointers/g. (3.67) and T5th in total 3-point field goals (33) thru Thursday.
  • Guard Jimmy Clark III, who played as a freshman and sophomore at VCU, has scored 35 points in DU's past two games (16 vs. Ball State & 19 vs. Marshall). Clark's career-high entering the season was nine. He is 7-of-16 from the arc in the two games. Prior to the Ball State game, Clark had never hit more than one 3-pointer in a DI game.
  • Austin Rotroff has come off the bench to lead the Dukes in rebounding in six of nine games. The 6-10 forward ranked second nationally in offensive rebound percentage (per KenPom) through Thursday. Rotroff grabbed a career high-tying 11 boards vs. Marshall.
  • Tevin Brewer, who missed the opener (appendix), has handed out a team-high 27 assists in eight games. He is averaging 12.0 ppg. (8-of-12 from 3-point) in his past three games.
  • Freshman Kareem Rozier has come off the bench to lead the team in assists twice. Rozier has 21 assists and two turnovers in 118 minutes this season.
  • Nine Dukes (Brewer, Clark III, Dixon, Grant, Hronsky, McGriff, Reece, Rotroff & Williams) have posted double-digit scoring games on the young season.

  • This is the second meeting between the Dukes and Aggies, with the first coming in the consolation game of the Quaker City Tournament in Philadelphia on Dec. 30, 1972 (L, 74-84).
  • This is DU head coach Keith Dambrot's first game vs. New Mexico State.
  • NMSU, located in Las Cruces, N.M., competes in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies were picked to finish second in both the WAC Preseason Coaches and Media Polls.
  • The Aggies, in their first season under head coach Greg Heiar, return just three players (zero starters) from last year's 27-7 WAC Championship team. NMSU, which returned just 9.5 percent of its scoring, has 16 newcomers on its 19-man roster.
  • Heiar led Northwest Florida State, and first-year Aggies Deshawndre Washington and Issa Muhammad, to last year's NJCAA National Championship. Duquesne's Jimmy Clark III was also part of that National Championship squad.
  • The Aggies are 0-2 on the road with a three-point loss at UTEP (64-67) on Nov. 12 and a one-point loss at Santa Clara (65-66) on Wednesday. NMSU, which is averaging 80.0 points per game, has four players averaging in double figures: Xavier Pinson (13.4), Deshawndre Washington (13.1), Anthony Roy (11.6) and Issa Muhammad (10.8).

  • Duquesne cut a 21-point second-half deficit to four with five minutes left but couldn't completely close the gap in seeing its win streak snapped at six.
  • Jimmy Clark III spearheaded the comeback with 16 of his career-high 19 points in the second half. Dae Dae Grant (18 points) hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second 20 minutes.
  • Tre Williams and Austin Rotroff had 12 and 11 rebounds respectively as DU tied the Dambrot Era high for rebounds in a game with 51 (25 offensive). Rotroff's total tied his career high.
  • The Dukes turned it over a season-high 17 times, included 14 in the first half, to help Marshall build a 46-27 halftime lead. The Herd outscored the Dukes 22-8 off of the 17 miscues. DU entered the game averaging 11.0 turnovers per game.
  • Marshall outshot Duquesne .472 to .342.
  • Duquesne's largest lead was four, at 10-6, with 16:18 left in the first half ...
