Volleyball Downs VCU in Four Sets

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne volleyball team took down the visiting VCU Rams 3-1 on Friday evening at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Duquesne improves to 7-20 (4-11 A-10) while VCU moves to 12-15 (7-8 A-10).

Besides the second set, the Dukes looked like the better team most of the night. Overall, it was some of the best volleyball they have played all season long.

Duquesne hit .275 tonight, which is its second-highest hitting percentage this season. VCU hit just .189.

Freshman Carsyn Henschen once again led Duquesne offensively, hitting .294 with 14 kills. She also had two blocks tonight.

Senior Morgan Kelly matched Henschen's kill-total with 14 of her own, all while hitting .308. She had four digs and two blocks to go along with her offensive numbers.

Graduate student Elizabeth Osborn notched 12 kills, most of them coming in the last two sets, as she came up with a handful of clutch points for Duquesne. She hit .211 tonight.

Senior Anita Parrott tied a team-high with three blocks and was the fourth Duquesne player with double-digit kills tonight, as she ended with 10. Freshman Ariel Helm had three blocks herself to go with five kills.

Senior Hailey Poling totaled 50 assists and 12 digs tonight. Freshman Madison Grimm led the team with 23 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was back-and-forth until about halfway through when Duquesne went on a huge 6-1 run to give itself a 21-16 lead. From there, the Dukes rolled to a set one win. Henschen led the way with six kills while Kelly ended the set with her fourth kill.

Set two was VCU's to lose from the start. The Rams jumped out to a 7-2 lead and never looked back to tie the match a one set apiece. Duquesne tried to get back into it, but a 6-1 run to make it 14-6 was too much to come back from. The Rams ran away with this one, winning 25-15.

Once again, VCU got out to an early lead at 7-2, but Duquesne was able to climb all the way back this time, tying it at 11-11. After letting VCU get a three-point lead at 19-16, Duquesne ripped off seven of the next eight points to go ahead 23-20. The Dukes took two of the next three to win the set.

In the fourth set, Duquesne was able to go up 10-6 thanks to an early 7-1 run. From there, the Rams were able to come back to take the lead at 15-14. Down 20-16, the Dukes kicked it into another gear to close out the match. They went on a 9-3 run to shut the door and win the first of two matches this weekend.
