PITTSBURGH -
Dae Dae Grant scored a game-high 26 points as Duquesne (6-1) extended its win streak to five with a 72-61 win over Big West favorite UC Santa Barbara (4-2) on Tuesday night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Dukes - whose roster features 10 first-year players - matched their win total from a year ago (6-24).
Tevin Brewer and
David Dixon added 13 and 12 points respectively for the Dukes who shot 49 percent and forced 17 Gauchos turnovers.
Dixon and
Austin Rotroff started an 8-2 run with back-to-back dunks to give DU an early 22-14 lead. The Gauchos cut it to two, before Grant hit a 3-pointer to begin a half-ending 9-1 run that put the Dukes up 37-27.
Grant had 13 points - including three 3-pointers - in the opening 20 minutes.
Grant picked up where his left off, with a pair of 3-pointers early to up the DU lead to 45-31.
The Gauchos answered with an 9-2 run to force a Duquesne timeout at the 13:36 mark with the score 47-40.
Duquesne got jumper from Dixon and a floater in the lane from
Quincy McGriff to push the lead back to double figures.
UCSB put the clamps on, holding DU to a pair of field goals over the next four-plus minutes to cut the lead to 55-51.
The lead was still four when Williams began a 12-4 run with a pair of free throws and a layup. Grant followed with his sixth 3-pointer.
Tevin Brewer added another 3-pointer to make it 67-55 with 2:42 to go.
UCSB would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Duquesne will be back in action when it hosts Ball State on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
NOTES
- It took just seven games for the Dukes (6-1) to match last season's win (6-24) total. DU's five-game win streak is its longest since 2019-20 when the Dukes opened with 10-straight victories, lost two, then won five more in a row to open 15-2.
- The victory tied the school record for November wins set in 2008 and tied in 2020 (both 6-0).
- This was the fourth consecutive 20-point game for Dae Dae Grant (26 points). It is the longest streak of 20-point games since Micah Mason scored 20 or more six-straight times in January/February of 2016.
- Austin Rotroff contributed seven points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench for the Dukes. It is the sixth time Rotroff has led the Dukes in rebounding this season.
- Kareem Rozier came off the bench to hand out a team-high four assists in 17 minutes. Rozier now had 17 assists and one turnover on the season.
- Duquesne is now 21-5 in non-conference home games since 2018-19.
- This was the third of nine-straight home games for the Dukes.
- Forwards Joe Reece (injured), R.J. Gunn (injured) and Kevin Easley (team suspension) were all not in uniform for the third-straight game. It was the fourth game in a row missed by Gunn and Easley.
- Duquesne's largest lead was 14, at 45-31, with 15:51 left ... UCSB's largest lead was two, the last of which came at 8-6 with 13:04 left in the first half ... there were four ties and two lead changes before Dae Dae Grant gave the Dukes the lead for good on a 3-pointer that made it 11-8 with 12:20 left in the first half ... UCSB led for 1:28 ... Duquesne led for 34:26.
