Dukes Cruise to Victory over Siena

Five different players scored 10 or more points for Duquesne

PITTSBURGH – A balanced scoring effort led the Duquesne Dukes over the Siena Saints 92-73 on Tuesday night at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Duquesne improves to 4-1 on the year while Siena falls to 2-3.

Five different players hit double-digits for the Dukes as they cruised to a victory two days before Thanksgiving.

Sophomore guard Naelle Bernard and junior forward Ayanna Townsend each had 18 points to lead the home side. Bernard was 3-for-6 from three and also tacked on five assists. Townsend was 7-for-12 from the field.

Junior center Precious Johnson had one of the best games of her career as she put up 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including going 2-for-3 from deep. She was also able to grab nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Megan McConnell recorded yet another double-double, her third of the season, with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She made six of her eight shots and was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Amaya Hamilton was the fifth Duke in double-figures, as she scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded six assists for her second career double-double.

Duquesne was much more efficient tonight than its last time out, shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and 94.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Dukes won the rebounding battle (50-41) and also had more assists than Siena (22-15).

Despite the outcome, the game didn't start great for the Dukes, as they made just two of their first nine shots. But before you knew it, McConnell gave Duquesne a 9-7 lead with a steal, layup and a three-pointer.

Townsend and Bernard teamed up for eight of Duquesne's last 10 points to end the first quarter, as Duquesne led after one, 22-21. The Dukes were 6-for-6 from the line in the first stanza.

A sloppy start to the second quarter by Duquesne allowed Siena to retake the lead, but Hamilton's and-one layup tied it at 27.

A McConnell end-to-end layup extended the Dukes run to 6-0 and gave them a 30-27 lead with 5:15 remaining in the first half.

Four-straight points by Johnson made it a 10-0 run, and a Bernard layup forced a timeout to make it 36-27 Duquesne.

Hamilton took over for the next minute or so, as she converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup then came right back down the court to hit a three-pointer.

After a McConnell three-pointer, the Dukes finished off a 21-8 run and led by 10 going into half. After two quarters, Hamilton led Duquesne with 11 and Bernard paced the Dukes with four assists.

The second half began slow for both sides, but back-to-back threes by McConnell and Bernard extended Duquesne's lead to 12 points.

Two free throws by Townsend and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Tess Myers made it a 17-point game, and the Dukes were on a 13-0 run in the blink of any eye.

After five more points from Bernard, Duquesne held a 21-point lead just before the end of the third quarter.

Bernard hit yet another three-pointer the start the third quarter, and Johnson scored another two points to give the Dukes 80 points on the night. The game wasn't in question from the point on, but Duquesne kept pushing and put an exclamation point on this win.

When the dust cleared, Duquesne ended up winning this one, 92-73.
