Dukes and Hornets Clash Wednesday Night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse

Duquesne (4-1), winner of three in a row, hosts Alabama State (0-5) on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 7:00 p.m. at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse (ESPN+). It is the second of nine consecutive home games - and second game in 48 hours - for the Dukes, who opened the homestand with a dramatic 83-82 win over North Florida on Monday. 

Tevin Brewer's foul-line floater with :01 left won the game that featured 18 ties and 23 lead changes. Dae Dae Grant led the Dukes with 26 points.

The Dukes, who are averaging 81.4 points per game, are scoring at a 90.0 ppg. clip at home.

Alabama State has been in Pittsburgh since its 73-54 loss at Pitt on Sunday. The Hornets led by three at the half (34-30), before being outscored 42-20 over the second 20 minutes. T.J. Madlock (15.0 ppg.), son of head coach Tony Madlock, led ASU with 16 points. 

This is Duquesne's first meeting with the Hornets who will not play a home game until Jan. 2. DU is 19-5 in non-conference home games - including wins at four different "home" venues - since 2018-19.

  • This is the second of nine-straight home games for the Dukes, who won't leave UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse until their Dec. 28 Atlantic 10 opener at Dayton.
  • DU, which averaged 65.2 ppg. last season, is averaging 81.4 ppg. through five games this year. The Dukes have scored 270 points in their first three home games - an average of 90.0 ppg.
  • Nine Dukes (Brewer, Clark III, Dixon, Grant, Hronsky, McGriff, Reece, Rotroff & Williams) have posted double-digit scoring games on the young season.
  • DU's depth is evidenced by its 154-132 advantage in bench points (Dukes are averaging 30.8 ppg. from the bench so far in 2022-23).

  • Guard Dae Dae Grant is shooting .537 from the field and .581 from 3-point (18-of-31) on the young season. Grant has topped the 20-point mark three (25 vs. Montana, 24 vs. Colgate & 26 vs. North Florida).
  • Tevin Brewer, who missed the opener (appendix), has handed out 15 assists in four games.
  • Guard Jimmy Clark III, who played as a freshman and sophomore at VCU, has eclipsed his career DI scoring high twice in four games with 11 at Kentucky and 13 vs. South Carolina State. His career-high entering the season was nine. Clark III, DU's top defender, has a pair of four-steal games.
  • Austin Rotroff has come off the bench to lead the Dukes in rebounding in four of five games. The 6-10 forward had a career-high 11 boards in 12 minutes off the bench vs. SC State and scored all of his season-high 10 points in the second half vs. Colgate. He had nine points and eight rebounds vs. UNF on Monday.
  • Freshman David Dixon scored 14 points and added seven rebounds in 22 minutes in his first career start vs. UNF. Dixon had three dunks vs. the Ospreys.
ALABAMA STATE QUICK NOTES
  • This is the first meeting between Duquesne and Alabama State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
  • Alabama State, located in Montgomery, Ala., was picked to finish 10th the SWAC in a preseason vote of league coaches. The Hornets went 9-21 last season.
  • The Hornets, who are opening with 12 consecutive road games, do not play at home until Jan. 2 (SWAC opener vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff). Their lone non-conference home game, scheduled for Nov. 18 vs. Carver College, was cancelled.
  • The Hornets are led by 6-3 South Carolina State sophomore transfer guard T.J. Madlock (15.0 ppg.). Madlock, the son of ASU first-year head coach Tony Madlock, scored 25 in the Hornets' opener at UAB (5-of-9 from 3-point). He also scored 17 at Pepperdine and had 16 on Sunday at Pitt.
  • Duquesne is 4-1 all-time against the schools that comprise the current Southwestern Athletic Conference, with all five meetings coming at home.
  • Alabama State is a first-time opponent for DU head coach Keith Dambrot. Dambrot is 1-0 vs. the SWAC at Duquesne with a 73-49 win over Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 13, 2017.

  • Tevin Brewer hit a foul-line floater with :01 left to give the Dukes an 83-82 win over North Florida.
  • Dae Dae Grant led the Dukes with 26 points (4-of-9 from 3pt). Freshman David Dixon added 14 points and seven rebounds in his first career start. Tre Williams finished with 13 points.
  • DU outscored UNF 20-0 off turnovers to counteract a 58 percent shooting effort by the Ospreys.
  • DU's 22 assists (with just six turnovers) were three shy of the Dambrot Era high set vs. Delaware State (2017-18) and tied at Fordham (2020-21).
  • Austin Rotroff gave another strong effort off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes.
  • Duquesne was without forwards Joe Reece (injured), R.J. Gunn (injured) and Kevin Easley (team suspension).
