Dukes Roll Past Manhattan to Start Season 3-0

PITTSBURGH – A 15-0 run in the second half propelled the Duquesne women's basketball team to a 67-46 win over Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Duquesne improves to perfect 3-0 on the year while Manhattan falls to 0-3.

It was an overall balanced effort from the home team as Duquesne shot 42.4% from the field and had six players score nine or more points.

Junior forward Ayanna Townsend scored seven of her team-leading 15 points in the second quarter to lead the Dukes. She grabbed seven rebounds, which also led the team.

Sophomore guard Tess Myers made a trio of three-pointers and scored 11 points today, while sophomore guard Naelle Bernard score a season-high 10 points.

Fresh off her first career triple-double on Friday, sophomore guard Megan McConnell shot 4-6 from the field, scored nine points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Duquesne controlled the game from beginning to end, as Manhattan only led for 45 seconds. A big first quarter gave the Dukes a hefty advantage, and Manhattan was never able to overcome it.

The Dukes' bench came up big in this one, as they outscored Manhattan's bench 18-6.

Defensively, Duquesne was pretty much able to shut down the Jasper's offense in the third and fourth quarters. The Dukes held Manhattan to just 21.2 percent shooting in the second half.

Manhattan guard and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Dee Dee Davis was Manhattan's entire offense today, scoring 28 points on 12-29 shooting.

Early on, the Dukes picked up right where they left off last game, hitting two three-pointers early to put themselves up 11-4.

Myers hit her second three-pointer of the quarter to put Duquesne up double-digits, then redshirt junior guard Lauren Wasylson followed that with a trey of her own.

Wasylson ended the quarter with an and-one layup, and the Dukes went into the second up 21-11 after shooting 4-8 from deep.

Townsend began the second quarter with two quick jump shots and Duquesne held a commanding 26-11 lead.

After a few minutes of missed shots on both ends, Townsend grabbed her own rebound off a free throw to put Duquesne back up by 11. She had seven second quarter points to lead the Dukes into halftime.

After two quarters, the Dukes led, 35-22. Dee Dee Davis of Manhattan had 17 points at half and scored each of her team's first 15 points.

Bernard connected on a three to begin the second half, but the Dukes were having trouble controlling Davis, as she scored nine quick points in the third quarter to chip into Duquesne's lead.

Manhattan eventually got the lead down to just five points, but the Dukes flipped the switch and went on a 10-0 run to end the third quarter.

A layup by McConnell and a three-pointer by Myers got Duquesne's lead back up to 10 points.

Shortly after those makes, Townsend drove to the lane and finished a three-point play after making the layup and getting fouled. Another McConnell layup got the Dukes' lead all the way up to 15.

That 10-0 run extended into the fourth quarter and got all the way up to 15-0 after a Townsend layup and a Wasylson three-pointer to begin the final frame.

The Dukes kept the Jasper's at arm's length the rest of the way and cruised for most of the fourth quarter to earn their third-straight win.
