Hot Shooting Dukes Pick Up Road Win at Saint Louis

Hamilton drops career-high 19 in the victory

SAINT LOUIS – Behind a season-high 11 three pointers, the Dukes collected a 71-62 win at Saint Louis Saturday night in Atlantic 10 play at Chaifetz Arena.

Duquesne (7-11, 2-4 A-10) was led by four players in double figures, including a career-high 18 points from Amaya Hamilton (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern). Hamilton converted 7-of-14 from the field and 2-of-5 from long range to lead the Dukes.

Libby Bazelak (Kettering, Ohio/Bishop Alter) posted 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win. Both Tess Myers (Lower Burrell, Pa./North Catholic) and Megan McConnell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) finished with 10 points. Myers matched Bazelak's team-high seven rebounds, while McConnell matched Bazelak's game-high five assists.

Saint Louis (5-10, 1-2 A-10) took the opening quarter's largest lead at 10-6 with 3:38 on the clock. The Dukes knocked down three treys to close out the quarter and head into the second up 15-14. All five of Duquesne's field goals in the first quarter were from three-point range.

Neither team led by more than three points in the tightly contested second quarter that saw six lead changes. Hamilton helped the Dukes tie the game up in the final two minutes of the half, before a driving layup at the horn by Bazelak sent Duquesne into the locker rooms with a 29-27 lead.

The Dukes had one of their best quarters of the season in the third. Duquesne out-scored Saint Louis 22-11 in the period and went on a 13-2 run that spanned over five minutes, before taking a 51-38 lead into the fourth.

Bazelak opened the final period with a trey that gave the Dukes their largest lead of the evening at 16, 54-38. Saint Louis cut the Duquesne lead to 10, 58-48, with 5:40 to play in the game, but a Myers basket and a smooth step-back three pointer by Hamilton rebuilt the Dukes advantage back to 63-48.

Saint Louis made things interesting with a 12-1 run that made the score 64-60 with 1:03 left on the clock. Bazelak herself made seven of eight from the charity stripe the final minute to put the game away and preserve the team's second road win of the season.

The Dukes finished 11 of 30 (37 percent) from three-point range. Duquesne was 25 of 59 (42 percent) from the field. Saint Louis entered the evening allowing teams to convert an A-10 worst 34 percent from beyond-the-arc.

Duquesne committed a season-low seven turnovers and finished with 16 takeaways, including 11 steals.

SLU won the rebounding battle, 44 to 28, and scored all 10 of the game's second-chance points. Duquesne finished with 21 fast-break points.

Ciaja Harbison, a three-time A-10 All-Conference selection, led the Billikens with a game-high 21 points.

Bazelak sits just four points away from becoming the 31st player in Duquesne history to reach 1,000 career points for the Dukes.

The Dukes return home for a two-game home-stand at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 26 when they welcome George Mason. The game will tip at 6 p.m. and broadcast on ESPN+.
