Dukes Cruise to Win Over Canisius

Hopfer scores twice and assists on two more in 4-0 win

PITTSBURGH - Maxi Hopfer had a pair of goals (57' & 63') and a two assists as Duquesne (4-2) remained undefeated at home with a 4-0 win over Canisius (0-3-2) on Wednesday night on Rooney Field.

Nate Dragisich (27') and Zach Mowka (50') added goals for the Dukes who dominated the evening, outshooting the Golden Griffins 22-10.

DU keeper Domenic Nascimben had six saves in posting his first shutout of the season.

Hopfer, who has 14 points in DU's past four games (five goals and four assists), led the Dukes with seven shots.

It was the second brace of the season for Hopfer, who netted a pair of goals in DU's 4-3 win over Saint Francis U on Aug. 31.

Dragisich had five shots and Mowka, who assisted on Hopfer's first goal, finished with four shots.

Freshman Jack Emanuel registered his first career point with secondary assist on the Dragisich goal.

Duquesne opens Atlantic 10 play on Saturday night vs. George Washington (2-3-1) on Rooney Field at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maxi Hopfer ripped identical shots from a tight right side angle that both sailed left of the frame within a two-minute span early in the match.
  • The two teams combined for nine shots in the first 19 minutes.
  • Nate Dragisich opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he took a pass from Hopfer and punched it short side by Canisius keeper William Howard. Jack Emanuel played the ball forward to Hopfer, who found Dragisich on the right side for the score. It was the fifth career goal - and second this season - for Dragisich.
  • Duquesne outshot Canisius 13-7 in a wide-open first 45 minutes.
  • Zach Mowka made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when he took a cross from Hopfer at the goalmouth and poked it in the right side of the net.
  • Duquesne continued to apply pressure and was rewarded in the 57th minute when Mowka returned the favor with the assist to Hopfer who finished a 2-on-1 breakout. It was the team-best fourth goal this season for Hopfer.
  • Hopfer made it two goals in six minutes when he converted a penalty kick at 63' following a Canisius handball in the box.
  • Duquesne substituted liberally the rest of the way as 21 players saw action.
  • The Dukes enjoyed a 60/40 possession advantage on the evening.

DUQUESNE HEAD COACH CHASE BROOKS
"Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in our sport and I'm very happy with the output on that end. On the other side of the ball, it was nice to get the shutout. We've been pushing and that was one of our goals coming into tonight. I was happy to see both sides of the ball clicking."
