LEXINGTON, KY. - No. 17 Kentucky (4-0-1) scored twice in a three-minute span of the second half (60' & 63') to take control in ending Duquesne's (3-2) win streak at three with a 3-1 victory over the Dukes on Sunday evening at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.
The win was UK's 33rd in 39 home matches since 2018.
The Dukes, who scored nine goals in their previous three games, struck first when
Ryan Goodhew took a pass from
Maxi Hopfer and converted in the 27th minute. It was just the second goal surrendered by the Wildcats this season.
Kentucky tied it on a penalty kick after DU was whistled for a hand ball in the box with two minutes remaining in the half.
DU keeper
Domenic Nascimben, who finished with seven saves, turned away a number of UK attempts early in the second half before the Wildcats broke through with a pair of goals in short order.
UK outshot DU 19-6 overall and 10-3 on goal. Nine of the Wildcats' 10 shots on goal came in the second half.
Hopfer and
Ryan Landry had two shots each for the Dukes.
Duquesne returns home to face Canisius on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+), before opening Atlantic 10 play vs. George Washington on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) on Rooney Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A left-footed shot from Hopfer at the top of the box sailed high of the crossbar in the 15th minute.
- Hopfer took a pass off a long run by Nate Dragisich to put DU's first shot on goal four minutes later.
- UK's Nick Gutmann curled a shot over the DU crossbar in the 20th minute.
- Ryan Goodhew intercepted a misdirected Kentucky pass, played it forward to Hopfer down the right side. Hopfer then crossed it to a streaking Goodhew who put it away to give DU a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.
- Duquesne got called for a hand ball in the box in the 43rd minute and UK's Baily Rouse converted the ensuing PK to tie it.
- The Duquesne back line rose to the challenge in the opening 45 minutes, consistently clearing UK attempts.
- Kentucky outshot Duquesne 8-4 in the first half, however the Dukes put three on net to one for the Wildcats.
- Kentucky applied pressure early in the second half, but DU keeper Dominic Nascimben stood tall with a trio of saves.
- Dragisich tried to go near post on a hard shot in the 56th minute but found the side netting.
- UK's Ben Damge got up from the ground in front of the net to poke in a ball headed into the six in the 60th minute to give the Cats a 2-1 lead.
- Kentucky's Luke Andrews scored off a corner at the back post to make it 3-1 in the 63rd minute.
- Nascimben made an outstanding diving save to turn away a Brock Lindow header in the 67th minute.
- Nascimben denied Lindow again when he got a hand on a point blank attempt in the 87th minute.
- UK outshot DU 11-2, including 9-0 on goal, in the second half.
