WASHINGTON – The Duquesne women's basketball team could not recover from a third quarter scoring spree from George Washington, falling to the Colonials, 63-45, on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Dukes (2-8, 1-5), who were playing its first game in 25 days, trailed by just three points at halftime, but were outscored by the Colonials (5-12, 2-9), 19-5 in the third quarter. The Dukes could not recover in the fourth quarter, as GW outscored the Dukes 29-13 in the second half overall to earn the victory.
Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team selection Libby Bazelak started in her first game this season scored her first points in 343 days. She led the Dukes with 11 points, converting 5-of-7 field goal attempts. She also led the Dukes in rebounding, grabbing five boards.
Diamond Bragg reached double-figures for the third consecutive game, with 10 points. The Camp Hill, Pa. native also contributed three assists. Tess Myers added eight points, while Ny Langley tallied seven.
Maddie Loder (15 points) and Ali Brigham (13 points) combined for 28 points to lead GW. Mayowa Taiwo led the charge off the glass with a game-high eight rebounds.Â
FIRST QUARTER
- The hard-fought opening quarter featured seven lead changes. The Dukes led 21-20 after Myers buried a jumper, but Jasmine Whitney would knock down a trey with 33 seconds left, as the Colonials led 23-21 after the first 10 minutes.
- Bragg posted a big first quarter, making 4-of-5 attempts for 10 points in seven minutes of action. Myers added five points. ÂÂ
- Both teams shot well during the first 10 minutes, as GW made 8-of-12 attempts including 5-of-6 from long range. The Dukes were right there, making 8-of-14 attempts and 4-of-7 from 3-point land.
SECOND QUARTER
- The second quarter was more of a defensive battle, as the Colonials outscored the Dukes by just a single point in the frame, 11-10. GW would take a 34-31 halftime advantage.
- Bazelak shined with seven of Duquesne's 10 points in the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- GW scored the first five points of the second half. After a Bazelak layup with 7:28 remaining in the third quarter, the Dukes' offense went quiet. An 11-0 from the Colonials was halted by a Myers 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the quarter. GW would take a 53-36 advantage in the final quarter.
- Duquesne shot 2-of-9 and turned the ball over eight times in the period. Â
FOURTH QUARTER
- GW would not let Duquesne back into the game, as the Colonials clamped on to a lead of at least 17 points throughout the fourth quarter.
