RICHMOND, Va. - VCU (7-3-1, 3-1-0) scored twice in a one minute span of the second half (52' & 53') in handing Duquesne (6-4-1, 2-1-1) its first Atlantic 10 defeat by a 4-1 score at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, Va. on Wednesday night.
The Rams, who led 1-0 after a tighly-contested first half, got goals in short order from Philip Klomp and Damian Gallegos to take a 3-0 lead. Scott McLeod scored in the 61st minute to make it 4-0.
Celio Pompeu assisted on all four goals for the Rams, who have now outscored opponents 10-2 at home.
Duquesne, which had scored one goal in its four previous meetings with VCU, matched that total on a goal from
Maxi Hopfer in the 76th minute. The goal was DU's first in three all-time trips to SportsBackers Stadium.
Freshman Cory Taylor, who was making his second career start, stopped five shots for VCU.
Hopfer, who is now tied for the A-10 lead in goals scored with eight, had all six of his shots - including three on goal - in the second half.
Nate Dragisich, who assisted on Hopfer's goal, added four shots for the Dukes.
Duquesne is idle until heading to Philadelphia to face Saint Joseph's on Sat. Oct. 16 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Duquesne keeper Domenic Nascimben dove to his right to turn away a Pablo Varela Fraga shot that resulted in a VCU corner. This time the Rams converted as Celio Pompeu found the head of Zeron Sewell at the far post. Sewell placed it in the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 in the 33rd minute.
- VCU had another chance in the 37th minute but Varela Fraga's hard shot from the left slide went right of the net.
- DU's leading scorer, Maxi Hopfer registered his first shot of the match off a free kick in the 46th minute.
- VCU made it 2-0 when Philip Klomp took a cross from Pompeu and placed it in the bottom left corner in the 52nd minute.
- Less then one minute later, Damian Gallegos made it 3-0 with a strike from the top of the box to the left bottom of the goal. Pompeu assisted on that goal as well.
- Scott McLeod scored the Rams' third goal of the half - on yet another pass from Pompeu - to make it 4-0 in the 61st minute.
